Thank you everyone for this.

I just installed my Uniden R3 with an RJ11 mirror tap from Amazon.

First I tried the pink connector, which worked, but the unit was on even after the car was locked for over 30 minutes.

Then I tried tapping into the black connector beneath it and it works like a charm now! After 6 minutes, both the 12V outlet on the center console and the R3 power off. :thumbsup:

I opened mine to tap in for my Valentine, and the pin set I have is simply too large. Which wiretap set did you get? Also, anyone else notice hot stinkin hot that unit is right above it?

Got my Mirror tap delivered last night and put it in this morning. It wasn't horrible at all getting the taps in. Now the getting the black connector out was a different story. Fixed the escort dash cam to sit more level and straight as well.

How I would rate my install experience.
Removing plastic shroud: 2/5
Removing connector: 4/5
Installing mirror tap: 2/5

Overall very satisfied.

I just did my R7 with the smaller pink/red connector and Iā€™m noticing the same...guess I may just need to pull everything back apart and use the bigger black connector...

BlendMount manufactures a pretty nice bracket for installing a radar detector beneath the interior mirror. I picked one up for my Belltronics unit and made the better part of a day working with it.

First the BlendMount is a quality item...flat-black, all metal and very sturdy (unlike the cheapy plastic brackets--and no, I'm neither an employee nor am I getting anything free here. It tends to be a little on the pricey side especially when you add in the taps for the electrical hookup.

In case you've been contemplating this, be prepared for considerably more time than you'd anticipate. Here are the surprises:

* The plastic housing against the windshield, surrounding the mirror base, is TWO pieces. It doesn't separate easily as there are three clips in the center (inside) holding the two halves together. Just knowing it parts in the middle would have saved me 1/2 hour;

* Once the plastic is removed, the mirror slides downwards and off. Not knowing this was a spooky experience as it actually fell in my lap. Eeeek!

* With the mirror removed you'll see TWO connectors, not the expected ONE. With no schematic found, it became an exercise in trial & error. That was a dilemma. Which connector shall I use? The larger connector was fairly easy to remove....but the other, smaller clip was impossible for me to get out of there. I finally gave up and decided to use the larger connector;

* I was able to find ground (multimeter test)...it is black/brown and the red wire is hot on opposite ends of the connector. Not surprising but read on...

* These wires don't turn off with the ignition! I triple-checked all the wires in the connector. I finally decided to manually turn on/off the radar detector and use the hot wire.

* Tightened the bolts on the mount and hooked-up...all works fine.

Some here may have either inside knowledge on Toyota's wiring and/or experience with these mirrors which would make this all much easier. Until then, maybe this will help.
Do you have pictures?

Very nice for 12v, but while all this is apart and opened up, it would be a great opportunity to add a USB port in the plastic assembly for my dash cam. Is there space? Any links to USB (12->5.2v) connectors or hubs perhaps?

Not to say it'd be impossible but space is pretty slim in the plastic assembly and getting that converter in there would be a tough call. Good idea otherwise tho!

Well, I went to all the effort to tap into the power source, got my detector all nice and installed, looks good (thanks to all the info on this thread), first long road trip after install was talking to a friend on the phone as I was going through a little town, turned down the volume as it was irritating him......forgot to turn the volume back up when I got out of the town and back on open desert road.........you can guess the rest...(sigh)

Sorry about your luck. Had the same thing happen to me after going thru a drive thru. I actually noticed the officer next to the median wall and thought, "Hmmm, I wonder what he is doing"? I then looked down at my V1 concealed display and it was pegged. I had turned down the volume while ordering at the drive thru.
I soon found out what the officer was doing...lol. Hope your ticket wasn't too expensive.

yup, same kinda thing, but we shall see. Here in AZ anything 20mph over limit they can get creative with, and even call it criminal if they wish. In this case, I have option to do an online class with no points, but it still shows ticket, so good overall, but I am still trying to see if I can get them to downgrade to non-moving violation.

Just to followup on this thread -

1. The place to press required some pressure per the video (my finger didn't work) from a small screwdriver but eventually the two pieces separate and basically fall off.

2. You can slide the mirror down in the mount - loosening the two steel clips might help. I tapped the black connector (4 wires) far right red/orange and grey 3rd from right with the second from smallest clips, although the next size up appeared to work as well.

3. Car locked - the detector does appear to go off (approx 5-6 min after locking car).

Not the greatest picture, but anybody that wants a inconspicuous place to mount your detector, the visor mount that comes with the Valentine v1 gen 2 will clip to the headliner and leaves enough room for the visor to still flip down and hide it. Also feel fairly confident that it's well in line with the rear window. After driving a while and getting some hits, I'll report back.

Don't mind the cord hanging down. My previous mirror tap from my last car is too fat for the Supra, so ordering another one.

EDIT:
Made a youtube channel and posted a video of my install. Reconfirming that the large harness going to the mirror works. Brown is negative, and red/blue is positive. Takes about 6 minutes to turn off after the car turns off.

That low mount does look good, and will certainly help hide it. My only concern would be the lack of rear view pickup.
