I do not own an iPhone and will never own an iPhone. I consider the lack of Android Auto to be the #1 practical failure of this platform. Please do not recommend an iPhone.

I currently have a Roadtop MMI unit. If you have one of these, you know it works reasonably well but does not offer touchscreen support and has intermittent handshake issues with phones. Please don't recommend another one of these.

I'm also aware of the AAidrive project. Not quite what I'm looking for, but fantastic effort all the same.

So that takes me to my question: I know many of you are running one of the many 7" Android Auto standalone units in the market. In the past, I see some of you mounted it down low in the phone charger area. Some have it up on the dash.

Looking to see your setups so I can make the best choice on the unit to buy and the extras I'll need to hardwire. Thanks in advance!

What firmware version are you running? What phone?
Haven't had issues with my Pixel 9 Pro or S23 Ultra and have had mine for 2~ years now.

@Nehpets808 Yes! We participated in a discussion about this idea over here. I could never find sufficient photographic evidence that we could cobble this into working, and was unwilling to take the risk to buy and experiment.

@nanaisu Whatever firmware came with the Roadtop MMI unit. I have had handshake issues on Pixel 6 Pro, OnePlus Open, OnePlus 12. Multiple high-quality cables (the good ones with USB-C pull-up resistors and verifiable USB certification). The wireless functionality never works despite being an available SSID, and the USB connectivity only works if you physically switch to the MMI GUI and manually select the Android Auto entry. Even then, it sometimes reports a handshake failure. I live with it because the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

PEMP makes a display that you can buy on Amazon, and while you'll still have the 'cant verify the fitment' problem, assuming you don't butcher it when checking the bolt pattern, you could then just return it (cuz Amazon) if it's not going to work.

I have decided to risk taking a bath on the Xtrons unit.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Thank you for making the possible sacrifice. I am looking forward to hearing about the outcome. I have a Road Top that I bought but haven't installed yet... but if my experience dealing with the seller in China is any indication, I am not going to be fully satisfied.

MMI unit works fine. Wish it were touch screen but it functions as an overlay. You get used to the knob. Ultimately youre limited by ID8

Update: Xtrons unit has shipped. No going back, now.
Following. I bought an iphone when I bought the car, purely for carplay. I'd love to find an excuse to go back to android/android auto

Lordy, I wish we were on ID8. Because Toyota phoned it in on the telematics is why we're here.
