Supra Ownership Longevity

Bought mine new 4 years and one month ago to this day. Only 14k miles as I work from home and travel quite a bit.

No plans on selling as there's nothing under $100k (double what I paid!) that I'd replace it with. Rented a C8 for a weekend in the west coast, just out of curiosity and it didn't pull my heartstrings enough to make the switch. However, I do intend to continue my ongoing passive search for a mint NA1 NSX, but that's a needle in a haystack under $100k.

Coming up on 4 years in December with 23k miles now. Used to be a regularly driven car, but now mostly for the track and on nice days, and occasionally going to the office when I don't feel like walking or taking the GRC.

That being said, the GRC being the shed did lower my annual Supra mileage.

I know what you mean. There are potentially faster cars, in the same price range as the Supra...but the other cars just don't "do it" for me.

I can appreciate that the C8 is a beast, and it's the most exotic Vette ever, both in looks, and the mid-engine layout. But I simply can't see me in one.

I'm on my third supra. First traded in for MT. Second total loss. Third 4 months in just hit 10k miles, I love this thing. I got bored of the auto in 2 weeks.

Yeah I had thought about trading for an MT but around me there are still premiums on them and a those prices I'd rather finally get into a 911. I really love the car itself, just clearly let down by the auto for me. I think I am spoiled by having multiple dual clutch cars that just feel superior to the ZF.

Just passed the 5 month mark, which means I'm well out of the honeymoon period at least.

I don't think we could be any happier with the car.

Don't keep my cars and bikes long but I have no interest in anything else that's out there - this is the first time that there's been no clear upgrade path.

I flirted with the idea of maybe a 718 gt4 in a couple years but I'm just not a Porsche guy and I don't believe that car is worth twice as much as my Supra, or is worth more than twice the running costs.

The only other car I might realistically change the Supra for would be the new MR2 if it ever actually arrives and even then it would need to be something special.

I agree on the price point and running costs being insane for the 718 GT4 ($125-140k USD listings) compared to a $55-60k car.

But having been on track with a buddy in a 981 GT4, that car has face-numbing levels of grip when cornering. The torque curve also allows the driver to just give it the beans out of a corner. And from what I've seen on track, the 718 just kicks all of that up to 11.

I will say, a track-prepped Supra does get mighty close for a lot less money, but it does feel a bit more nervous on the limit.

My C8 was really just loud and gaudy in the end. Plus the C8's are everywhere you turn. 75% of Porsche owners buy them for the image and really know nothing about their cars. The Supra is the sleeper at every intersection! No plans to sell.

If I had to buy a Supra today or start all over again, I'd get the manual.

This is my first auto besides my past '15 Golf R. I've always had manuals and always loved manuals. But when I drove a Supra from Turo for a weekend before my purchase, I was shocked at how well this auto behaved. Even better than the lauded VW/Audi DSG. Also, the XHP flash makes it even better.

I praise GM for what they did with the C8. Astonishing. Especially for the price. However, yes, they are EVERYWHERE and didn't captivate and amuse me the way the Supra does when I had one for a day.

I agree. Porsche is like a country club. The entry fee is hardly worth it unless you're committed. Whether you're financially plush or a serious track enthusiast, they're not for everyone. Most people buy them for the panache and appeal, but only a great driver will appreciate them and reap the rewards, financially and emotionally.

However, on the street, and for the masses, the Supra does that for a fraction of the cost.

I don't drive on the track and if I did I certainly couldn't afford to risk a gt4 on it!

This car was supposed to be a nice weekender or short commute to work fun car for me. Then I did that dadgum free track day. Hot damnnnnnnnn…. I should have known better ?. I had recently sold a dedicated S2K track car and was going to use my manual MX5 to toss around on track days.

Now I’m fighting not turning her into a track only ride. She’s a keeper for me!

This auto caught me by surprise. I love it! The manual wasn’t available in 2022 or I would have went that route. But now, I’d buy the ZF again if I had to choose. The dual clutches I’ve driven in the past, all 2019 or prior, were just too “clunky“ for my taste.

Welcome to the club amigo! On the top of my head:

Don’t use Toyota for maintenance, find a well recommended independent BMW mechanic (if not doing things yourself), change your fluids often, driving is better than sitting, let her (or any) car warm up before driving hard, use your free track day to become a better driver & not wreck the one you’ve got ?

What else am I missing?
