I wonder what it's all about then. Are there inherent problems when pushing 4 cylinder engines vs 6 cylinders, aside from a power ceiling? I'm new to tuning so I might just be misunderstanding. I've got some bolt-ons on the way for a stage 1 setup and it'd be nice to know if I'm just going to blow it up in the next 20k miles

I mean, for all intents & purposes the B48 is essentially a B58 with the front two cylinders removed. They develop the six cylinder architecture first, then work backward in order to create a four cylinder version of it. It's much more cost effective and results in a better design for both iterations. And to prove my point, there are several internal components shared between the two, a big one being the connecting rods.
Actually... No, the B48 was produced first, the B58 afterwards.
