If I had misunderstood your meaning then I apologize. I didn't mean to suggest you felt the A80 was ugly.Interesting perspective...
I didn’t say the MKIV is an ugly car....im just saying next to a MKV, it’s age is pretty apparent when next to a modern design. “Meh old hat” isn’t something to use against anything old (2000GT), but other cars during the MKIV’s era have withstood the test of time in terms of design (300ZX, RX-7, NSX) vs. their modern counterparts. This just goes to show the FT-1 influence on the MKV.
If we're speaking about how a new sportscar's prior era predecessor has aged in comparison then I think it makes it a little easier.
The FT-1 was a stunning concept. Its influence on the A90 is very apparent despite the big differences. However I still feel that the A80 aged very well even next to the A90. Just my opinion but I don't see it as being a dated design, just a different one compared to the lines of the A90. Both the A80 and A90 are beautiful to me and yet express themselves differently and the A80, to me, still looks visually relevant.
Now of the other cars you mentioned:
The Z32-TT short wheelbase 300ZX 90-99 is another timeless design but one that I can clearly see came from design ideas rooted in the 1980's. It would be nice to see such a shape in a new Z today but it won't happen of course. The Z33 that replaced it looked like it was influenced by the designers of the late 90's Renault Clio V6 (a *really* cool looking car but not "timeless beautiful"). The Z34 tried to work with that existing chassis and body shape a bit and did take the Z farther away from the Renault influence but as you said it still does not top the Z32 design.
The RX-7 FD is also a timeless and beautiful shape just like the A80. Mazda has not yet surpassed that car. Their JDM Cosmo from the 90's was beautiful but not on the same level as the FD RX-7. Their RX-8 wasn't even the same model of car and there is no comparison. Their current concept car design language is very nice and promising but makes me think they are making another Cosmo rather than a new RX-7.
The new NSX.... that car does unfortunately look "busy" compared to the 90-2007(?) NSX. I'd also call the 90's NSX before the flip-up headlights were done away with and the lines softened a timeless design.
It is not easy to achieve such a thing. In some decades an automaker just nails it while some of their contemporaries do not. In the next decade another automaker absolutely nails a design while the one that hit a home run a few years back cannot or will not create another visual home run.
I'm not advocating that the MKV should have looked like an MKIV btw! I like the way the MKV looks! I just see the A80's visual statement as remaining strong and relevant. If the body kit is left stock it's a beautiful car. Now outrageous body kits on MKIV's I have never liked and have always felt cheapen and ruin the visual appeal of the car.
I also do not see the current A90's body kit as being the only way it can look beautiful. I have seen one CG rendered body kit with wing in particular that both keeps with the car's theme and enhances its look.
