Your logic is flawed...if Toyota wants customisation on the 6MT (which they did), they would approach ZF, not BMW. What ZF will do and did, was to try and reuse as many existing components as possible to reduce cost.

Toyota designed the specification required for the manual Supra, not BMW. BMW has no involvement in that at all. So in reasoning and in practice, the 6MT is all Toyota. The fact that some parts number of the Supra 6MT matches some parts number of BMW's 6MT components is irrelevant.

This is coming from an engineer. Whoever comes up with the design and specifications of the unit is the mastermind of that unit. The components of a unit can be shared across platforms. Using your logic, a Porsche GT3 is a parts bin car, any BMW M car is a parts bin car...
that's pretty much what the bimmerpost insiders have eluded to. if Toyota wanted a MT then they would have to go in at it alone because BMW didn't want to offer it on the 6 cyclinder Z4.

The forum was mentioned on click-bait car news. ?

https://www.torquenews.com/17612/to...-we-have-listened-gr-supra-be-released-manual

After reading this press release, I immediately hit the forums to see what actual Supra owners thought. On a Supra forum called supramkv.com, a poll was shared on whether or not people would switch to the manual or keep the automatic.

Of the three answers that you could choose from, "yes, in a heartbeat", "no, staying with auto," or "debating," almost everyone choose that they would stay with the automatic Supra. A lot of the reasons why they wouldn't want to switch over is simply because they already have too much invested in aftermarket parts on their automatic Supras that they don't want to go through the hassle of taking everything off and putting it back on their new manual Supra.

One commenter named jtsang25 wrote, "I'm knee-deep in parts and ppf to switch over now. Not taking the time to remove all aftermarket stuff and transferring it over or buying everything again." Others said they had been driving manuals forever so switching back to a manual wouldn't want to be their first choice.

Someone else said they wouldn't switch because they had already bought a Subaru WRX STI manual because they couldn't get the GR Supra in a manual. I guess if Toyota was using BMW engines in their Supra, why wait so long to use their manual transmissions? The technology already existed so waiting was pretty pointless.

I think with some time and a few promotional videos showing just how powerful a manual GR Supra would be might change some people's hearts. Until then a lot of Supra owners won't switch over to a manual because of either aftermarket parts, financial restraints, or solely because they don't like BMW manual transmissions.

I mean... most people who bought automatic Supra MKV's are pretty happy with their cars. It most closely fit what the majority of those buyers were looking for and I am not surprised that a manual model's introduction doesn't dissuade most of them.

Meanwhile others were turned off by the lack of a manual option and either waited or... bought something else with a manual transmission. Also not surprising.

Now that a 6-speed manual is going to be available *new* buyers who are interested in a manual transmission version will be interested in the Supra MKV.

Torquenews must be having a slow news day. That, or the writer of the article is extremely lazy to have ignored the huge volume of info on these same forums clearly explaining plausible reasons, like them or not, as to why Toyota didn't release a 6-speed manual option back in 2020.

That describes me perfectly. I've always liked the Supra, but wouldn't buy one without a manual transmission. Now that we're getting one, it's on the top of the list for my next new car purchase. And honestly, the options are getting fewer and fewer every year. At this point, I'm pretty sure that I'll end up with a Supra, most likely a 2024 model. I do want to see what BMW does with the upcoming M2 though. That car might also sway me, but I'm thinking that BMW will keep it a more "pedestrian" type vehicle from a styling perspective instead of the wild child Supra. Part of the Supra's appeal for me is the styling for sure.

Can't tell, but is that possibly the CU Later Grey behind it?
Great eye! It looks like there’s also a Matte White one behind the CU later gray as well.
