Imo the mark V needs to do better than the C7. 435HP and more than 3500 LBS makes it competitive with the Muscle Cars NOT the C7.
In this day and age with all the strict emissions regulations every company is making a big push to downsize vehicles and shed weight.

I have to agree with Matt. This is the current C7 we are comparing it to and with that weight and power it is already losing in a bench race. In 2 yrs or more when the Supra is finally in production it will have new and better competitors in the market.

Do you guys not realize the new C7 actually gained weight from the previous year? It shed weight in some areas but it was offset by all the added equipment and beefier parts.

The C7 is also a 2 seater and uses a good deal of carbon fiber already. It would be a miracle if the FT-1 with a 2+2 setup would come under the corvette in weight.

Here I found it, check it out. This breaks down all the weight components of the C7. It managed to put on 90 pounds over the 2013 model even as it lost 100 pounds in the frame and 37 pounds in the body panels. It just shows you how all of these things adds up.

I'm not trying to rain on any parades but be realistic. The Supra is not going to beat the C7 in weight when the dimensions hinted at are already much larger and it needs to fit 2 additional people in the back.

The National Corvette Museum is holding its Bash event this weekend to officially kick off the 2013 season as well as the 2014 Corvette C7, and one of the official details that was revealed yesterday (besides C7 pricing info) was that the 2014 C7 coupe without the Z51 package has an estimated curb weight of 3,298 pounds (1,496 kg) – or 90 pounds (41 kg) heavier than the 2013 C6 coupe’s 3,208-pound (1,455 kg) curb weight.

Here are the detailed mass reductions and additions to the C7. Keep in mind that these may not be all-inclusive:

Areas Of Mass Reduction
  • Frame: 99 pounds lighter
  • Body panels: 37 pounds lighter
  • Hatch: several pounds lighter
  • Control arms: now hollow, several pounds
Total weight savings is in the vicinity of 150 pounds, or 68 kg.

Areas of Mass Addition
  • 35.2 pounds — direct injection, VVT, AFM
  • 6.6 pounds — standard engine oil cooler
  • 13.2 pounds — dual mass clutch
  • 15.4 pounds — steel torque tube part of AFM
  • 5.5 pounds — AFM exhaust valves
  • 11 pounds — 7th transmission speed
  • 18.5 pounds — strengthened differential, half shafts
  • 18.3 pounds — larger fixed brakes
  • 17 pounds — new interior appointments and safety features
  • 17.2 pounds — upgraded seats
  • 18.5 pounds — structural safety requirements
  • 31.5 pounds — new infotainment and cabin technology, as well as relocating battery to the rear
  • 3 pounds — bigger fuel tank
That’s a total weight gain of 210 pounds, or 95 kg.

Opting for the Z51 performance package would add transmission and differential coolers, a rear sway bar, larger wheels, electronic differential, and a spoiler. Although unconfirmed, these changes will most likely result in the addition of 150-200 pounds.

The GM Authority Take
As it stands, despite the various weight-saving technologies and components, the 2014 Corvette C7 is heavier than the outgoing C6. It’s not heavier by much… but it is still heavier… while being more capable, refined, and luxurious than the outgoing model.

They could of course if they used more light weight materials thus pushing up the price and probably putting it out of the reach of most of us on the forum.

Anything is possible with more money and a bigger price tag but it also depends what kind of car they wanna make/market. The RC-F is suposed be around 4000 pounds and no doubt be more expensive than the Supra. Is just a matter of choosing performance over luxury and every little creature comfort.

With a partner in BMW and codeveloping a platform I am not giving up on the Supra being able to match the C7's weight. Power is an easy fix. How many of us are gonna keep our cars stock?

What it comes with from the factory is really more about how aggressive they want to be the first year, leaving room for improvements and warranty concerns.

To introduce some reality into this discussion: the mark iv supra had a curb weight of:

1,460 kg (3,219 lb) (non-turbo)
1,550 kg (3,417 lb) (turbo)

15 years later of a ton of new safety requirements for sports cars with bigger engines, bigger brakes, bigger tires and way more technology and nanny systems. do we really expect it to weigh less than this??

Length
4,515 mm (177.8 in) (1993–1998)
4,514 mm (177.7 in) (1999–2002)

Width
1,811 mm (71.3 in)

Height
1,265 mm (49.8 in) (1993–1998)
1,275 mm (50.2 in) (1999–2002)

This is some pretty huge news from a scan of a Motortrend article.

They say a 2nd FT1 concept is gonna be shown and a widebody race version is gonna be shown in GT6.... best part is it says that Toyota is shooting to hit the specs in GT6 - that's 485 hp and only 2900lbs. All for about 60grand. Crazy if true!!

Great news! im hoping it is not just a different color but some actual sheet metal changes. I can't imagine why it would need to be commissioned if it just involves different paint.

Bah i dont want no stinking bmw engine. I was hoping they were developing a platform together and the engine would be toyotas. They supposedly have a twin turbo v6 slated for the next IS-F. That would be PERFECT for the Supra.

The FT-1 Vision GT is coming to Gran Turismo transformed into a race car version with a much more aggressive body with tons of aero and a new black color scheme with red accents.

"Here is a sneak peek of a very special version of the Toyota FT-1 sports car concept vehicle that will soon be available for download in Gran Turismo®6, exclusively on PlayStation®3. This exciting concept was designed by Toyota’s Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, CA. Stay tuned for more."
