@kaj Haha. Yeah I did say “excluding driver skill.” Hoping to eventually get on a track with the Supra, but currently slaving away and saving towards another addition to add to the stable.

In the same boat as you and Im waiting on tuning for now. CA emissions is annoying AF.

haha. I have been chasing new/old cars. Lots of buying/selling. Finally decided to quit f'ing around, so committed to a point series and spent my ENTIRE car fund on a classic car to keep forever. That forced me to stop shuffling cars around and focus and enjoy what I have.
I have to admit, it's kinda nice not dealing with sellers or buyers! :D

I'll continue to watch.
I'm still not convinced this car needs more power.
Maybe once the suspension and aerodynamics are finished.
It's fun stock, but a nice downpipe and a tune adding 80-100 more HP simply adds more smiles per gallon. Life is too short to be stock.

I just got my 2020 tuned on Ecutek and love it. I guess my outlook is that I don't have to worry about it until 2028 when I'll have to start getting the car smogged. By then, who the heck knows what nasty tricks California is going to be playing. Hopefully, I'll be long gone by then but if I need to flash back to stock to get it to pass smog in 5 years, then I'll deal with that 4 1/2 years from now. Until then, going to enjoy the crap out of the car.

Yeah... But life's also too short to fight over warranty issues. ?

Or sell the car, I'm guessing.

Yeah I figure if I do sell, I can always have my dealership flash it to the latest code and poof! Like it never happened
I've done that with a car. $350, but well worth it. The car sold immediately (not many smog-legal Evos in CA ?)

I'm a native of SoCal but I now live in Massachusetts (lucky me! go from one strict emission state to another strict emission state)

Anyways back on topic...

Here in Massachusetts, we have to perform a state inspection every year to make sure we're not driving around the snow with bald tires, blown shocks, shattered windshields, or shot out head/tail lights. It's mainly for safety reasons, to prevent running over wild turkeys, and not so much about emissions because (most) inspection stations will pass you even if you don't have a CARB sticker on your intake or drive around with a loud ass aftermarket exhaust.

The problem comes when they plug the Supra into the Matrix to run OBD Readiness tests. All monitors have to show a 'Ready' status which is honestly not difficult to do. I believe Cali has the same requirements as well. BM3 disables Check Engine Light (CEL) monitoring so make sure to enable it too! Getting the monitors isn't difficult as you need to flash your ECU back to stock and run a full and complete drive cycle.

The other hurdle is the dreaded CVN and CA ID mismatch on the ECU. I've reached out to Femto on this and their response was:
Hi, all factory checksums and cvn are preserved after our unlock. But they may change after tuning, you need to ask your tuner to create a proper tune, so everything will be preserved "as stock".
My takeaway from this is that you have to explicitly request to preserve your factory stock tune on your unlocked ECU. Not ECUtek, BM3, MHD, or your tuner's version of a stock tune. It should be the actual stock tune that Femto preserved on the ECU when they unlocked it.

Check out this post: https://www.supramkv.com/threads/massachusetts-state-inspection.17468/post-274838

This person was able to pass his annual emissions and inspection in Massachusetts. Femto unlocked, tuned with BM3, and AMS catted downpipe. I'm honestly not sure about the OP of the above thread and why he was unsuccessful with passing when another member of this community was able to do it.

All I would say is that you just need to be prepared prior to your smog check and talk to your tuner about how they went about tuning your ECU.

Good Luck~

Who do you request? FEMTO or tuner? Thanks
