Has anyone attempted to update/upgrade to BMW iDrive7 for our cars? I work at BMW and noticed that the previous gen 7series is and is the only model that we could possible change to the iDrive7 software as it uses the same EVO system as we currently use in our Supra. Curious if anyone who is out side of warranty, paid off and has another vehicle has attempted this upgrade. I would imagine it would take using the screen and software from the 7series and codding the system to work. I do wish we had the ability to go to 8.5 but 7 would be a slight change as we are outdated using iDrive6.

I'm not super familiar with the differences and or if this is just a software thing.

Could you elaborate some if possible? Also interested as I just agree that the infotainment screen is a bit outdated compared to a lot of other vehicles in the same year although I know these are all borrowed parts.

Thanks

iDrive 7 doesn't use the NBT EVO headunit that we have on the Supra, it uses the MGU headunit. So getting iDrive 7 means swapping the headunit.

At minimum AFAIK for the swap you need a clean/virgin MGU headunit, the ID7 screen, and the 4th gen Bosch cluster. There's some wiring involved in splicing the factory harness to work on the MGU headunit, but it can be done. Coding shouldn't be impossible to make the head unit think it's a G29 Z4, or a G30 instead of a J29 Supra, as the BDC and DME are the same.

I was able to do this in my old F30. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I believe I was able to get ID6 into the ID5 head unit with simple coding. Surely it's more complex in this platform, but anecdotally seems plausible.
