Hi All. Currently looking at buying an MKV Supra but I am very worried about getting into one when they are most expensive and watching the bottom fall out as soon as the car market corrects.

What's the general consensus on how well this Supra will hold it's value? I know it's still a bit early in this generation's life cycle but seeing on how this car is really a BMW, will it depreciate like a BMW?

Your guess is literally as good as anyone else’s until they stop producing them. To me prices seem pretty stable the last couple months. If the car market bottoms out all cars are dropping anyways. A car is a known deprecating asset and if you’re worried about price dropping over a couple of years then IDK what to tell you.

Friends of mine that have owned M cars have done really well over the years, I’m hoping the Supra will depreciate more like those tbh

Really happy I picked mine up just before car prices got all stupid. Got about 6500 off.
I have a friend who is a GM at a local Ford dealer. They have actually “sold” cars to dealership personnel just to get it to be considered a used vehicle and then immediately sold the same vehicle to a paying customer. They’ve done this to get people who are upside down financed by getting the car’s “value” increased by being used. Can’t imagine how much more upside down those poor souls will be when the market invariably corrects. They’ll be in that vehicle for decades…

Don't have much to add beyond what others said but if you do buy new, do not pay dealer markup. We are in weird times with severely constrained inventory, supply chain issues, inflation, and the like. Hard to say what things look like in the long term if manufacturers and dealers try to artificially constrain supply and force prices up.

But if depreciation is a huge problem, then maybe look at older model Civics, Corollas, RAV4, etc. $300K used GT3s aside, sports cars are not a good investment.

I'll offer up my crystal ball. According to caredge.com a brand new Supra after 5 years assuming 12k miles per year will still have 75% resale value which is outstanding. Biggest challenge will be to keep it stock and find one at MSRP. Mods and dealer add-ons will decrease it's value. If you can get one at sticker I say go for it. Toyota spent a small fortune to ensure the engine meets their standards to earn the Toyota badge. Go enjoy it.

Man if it does keep 75% of the re-sale value after 5 years it'll be outstanding. There's also no promise that Toyota will keep making these long term right. Could be a single gen car for all we know, which can only help drive up the value.

Yep it's special for sure, and pretty much attainable for the Gen Z crowd once they come of age and save a bit of cash for a down payment. So should see reasonable demand in the used market amongst the JDM crowd.

I guess it would depend on what BMW does with the next Z4 as well

2 seater coupes are quite rare to begin with
Take a look at Z4 M coupes vs. their E46 counter parts
Easily low 40$k value for a low mileage 15 yr old Z4 M Coupe

Get a manual transmission version. I think it will hold it's value pretty well as manual transmission cars are disappearing quickly.

Seeing how many Supras are ending up in salvage yards and how many people are clapping them out (like myself), I feel like pristine low mileage versions will be worth something in 20-25 years. Especially the manual versions.

Not really an investment opportunity unless you're in the business of flipping a significant amount of collector cars.

If you're looking to keep a sports car for 3 to 4 years to trade in for something else, then get a decent trim of any Cayman or 911.

This will likely be that last generation of manual sports cars, so the value should hold well on the MTs.

Speculation aside..

Ask yourself if you're okay with the concept of lighting up a bonfire with 30K of cash in your back yard and inviting all your friends to watch.. If the answer is yes, you’re ready to buy a sports car!
