I bet this is covered in the article linked above, but another silly question is….

Your intake is now cooler, but the turbo hotter with its shield/blanket.. As this cooler intake air travels through the turbo is it not heated up more making no difference in the end?

EDIT: and I may get one of these at some point too just for the eye candy ?

but even helped to decrease the thermal load of a part that is directly attached to the turbocharger "
That's the part I'm trying to wrap my head around. Maybe because exhaust gases are sped up so evacuate sooner? Hell, I dunno.

"Thus, the other two heat transfer modes (convection and radiation) between the turbine housing and the VGT housing must have been the main reasons for these temperature levels inside the actuator."
Maybe because of the coolant and oil, cooling the center bearing, conduction doesn't play as large as a role in heating up the compressor side of the turbo. No matter what I think decreasing the radiant load on other components in the engine bay is a good idea.
I'd think so too, so would consider a blanket for my OEM turbo. If my cat didn't get so hot, I'd put something on that too LOL

PNW, so our summer temps don't really go past 80-85 deg F.

It's been 2 years since I installed it, but I do remember pre-shielding that the intake temps were around 135-145 degrees; after it, it was running around 120 degrees. All stock at the time.

This “heat shield” would be much more effective if they lined the underside with a material that actually absorbs heat.

Not a Corvette.

Inconel would be best, that is what I have used on track cars in the past and it works very very well. I decided not to splurge on that this time around.

I have been playing with my infrared gun hitting the Verus resonator delete before and after with the verus shield plus and minus the OEM shield. Not very controlled but the addition of the OEM shield did seem to help. I did not test prior to the verus shield but they provide plenty of data. I am wondering how much of the heat both convection and radiant is from the cat and not just the turbo. Have been wondering if things would run cooler with a less restrictive aftermarket catted DP.

You need to log your pre-intercooler intake temps, not your post-intercooler temps. Honestly though, with the OEM box, it shouldn't make any difference as the OEM box draws air from outside the engine bay.
I was checking the path of the oem ai and also saw it draws air somewhere under the passenger side headlight but haven’t taking things apart to see exactly where. But the grill under the hl looks like a 2 piece unit such that if you took the upper piece out you might get more air flow to the ai. Wondering if you or anyone else has messed with or checked that?

I did find this from another thread:

The intake sits beside the headlight and draws from the space behind the upper bumper fascia. There is a thread about an aftermarket plastic extension from the OEM position to the high pressure area in the center of the bumper cutting thru the radiator shroud.

Made a proper insulated heat shield and intake snorkel today that directs air to the air box inlet you’re talking about.

Results were over a 10F drop in IAT.

Can read about it here: https://www.supramkv.com/threads/diy’d-a-manifold-heat-shield-intake-snorkel.18838/#post-297487

Can confirm it didn’t do anything for my 6 port running a pure 850. Intake temps were always 25-30 degrees above ambient
Random question. How do you like your Pure 850? I haven't seen many reviews on the forums of the Pure 850. It seems like the Pure 800 is the most common one.
