I got "it's just a BMW in disguise" from a guy who just got off the bus before walking past my car.... pretty much self explanatory on how stupid he looked.
I take it you do not live in a city. After spending the last decade in NYC, and the most recent two years in Chicago I can say with 100% certainty that everyone takes the bus/train.

In my experience, outside of the car community nobody cares or knows about the cheap shots. People with no stake in a hobby or field of passion only evaluate/care about what’s in front of them. It’s fast, looks good (or unique), sounds nice, and is branded as a Toyota. On my end I personally don’t care because it’s what I wanted. We all have our own reasons for liking things.

I had two cars that I was back and forth on, on what to buy. The Supra, or a Porsche Cayman 2.0. It was generally the older guys that gave me lip about choosing the Supra. The younger guys at work were enthusiastic about the Supra. I feel I made the right choice. I never get tired of driving it. I can't wait to put the new Work Meister S1 3p (matte gunmetal with polished lip, black assembly bolts)

It's all online, the one person who said "nice bmw" to me was driving a truck that costs less than one of my tires.

Anyone who complains that it's all BMW underneath; last time I checked, the M2 is a pretty capable car. And who gives a shit where a car comes from if it's a great car? Toyota says it's a Toyota, end of story. I'm perfectly ok living rent-free in their heads while I drive the hell out of an amazing machine.

I get the 'Nice BMW', or 'It's not really a Supra' fairly regularly. From the domestic crowd, the usual import hate. That and either people just don't know or they're trying to make underhanded comments asking if it's a stick and then being disappointed when I say it's an auto.

The most fun lately has been from imports and Z fans who are convinced that now that the new Z is coming out all of a sudden the Supra is now going to be trash somehow? Not really sure how that's supposed to work.

The rest of the time is usually full of stares, thumbs up, "Is that a SUPRA?!?!?', and then a few asking what kind of car it is, what body kit, etc(stock).

If you take the time to try and hate on someone's car purchase, that speaks volumes about you more than their vehicle choice. I find haters hilarious but have no desire to change their minds. Just let the car do the talking at whatever track you're at.

California doesn't count, people use cars for daily transportation there. :p
As much as California is a heavy regulated state as far as SMOG and stupid bullshit rules revolving around cars, it is pretty nice seeing people daily their sports cars. ? annnnnd that's how the Supra eats, random encounters with the V8 boyz. ??

I love idiots who repeat pathetic and easily made critiques from the hack automotive press. The press is overtly in bed with the makers overall. The press walk a fine but well defined line of what they can and cannot say to avoid subtle effective pressure from the makers.

Wow something is fake on a car that is not a REAL or ACTUAL race car. Its called aesthetic and MARKETING. The only actual question that matter is how DO YOU like the car for YOU. Fake vents are likey style features on athletic shoes. Those features wont make you run faster at all lol. They can hopefully add an eye catching point to gain your interest.

Does it 'suck' .......sure. Does it matter when you like the car, its driving position, cockpt, superb engine and gearbox/brakes etc etc etc - NO.
I totally agree! My wife on the other hand LOVES the style vents...and I love to drive the car. Win-win for us. I'm not crazy about the fake vents but the Supra isn't the only car that has them nowadays. I used to poke fun at Mustang fake vents during the 00's, now here I am..LOL. My mustang buddy is ready to rip into me when I finally see him.

Love the shoe analogy!

I believe you are so correct...people just regurgitate youtube video commentary so often these days...and creators never tell the full truth for fear of repercussions.

Went to Auto Zone for some odds and ends and a young gentleman working there vehemently said out loud "Oh their's a bunch of BMWs parked in the parking lot." He was talking about a 335i and my Supra. The he began telling coworkers about how the new Z is going to destroy it (the Supra).

Then the dude told me I should have waited to buy the new Z. I told him that I didn't care and that I appreciate all sports cars. Then I started to let him know that some of the great sportscars in motorsport history came from collaborations. I also told him that I feel bad for people who get swept up in cult-like brand loyalty to companies who could care less if they lived or died.

He did not talk to me anymore after that.

This was the first time I was every met with vitriol concerning my car.
I totally agree with this no-brand loyalty too...I just like a good sports car period. I always tell brand loyalists that they are letting that brand's accountants decide what they can drive or not drive. Same argument in the old days of LS swapping JDM cars ect. ect.

I love the new Z...but I can say as a six time z owner which included the 350/370z cars...the new Z is basically the Z that should have come out in 2015...better late than never I guess. Still think it's awesome though but the Supra is the way I decided to go for now.

I occasionally hear the BMW stuff but here's my unpopular opinion: BMW makes better cars than Toyota and there isn't anything Toyota could have done better. As a former BMW driver I would have never gotten the Supra if it wasn't build by BMW so it's funny when people think calling it a BMW is an insult - like wtf? I am glad its a BMW
I agree. I was going to get the new m2cs, but I work at Toyota manufacturing so getting a bmw with my massive discount was a no brainer haha. I don't think Toyotas are junk by any means, just very generic
