It's a concept car, it is supposed to look ahead of its time. The production car will not look so futuristic. At the same time the Supra has been out of production for well over a decade and Toyota has been mostly out of the sports car game that entire time. They need to come in with a bang, not a warmed up version of the old car. I love the MKIV as much as I'm sure everyone here but this is about FUTURE toyota so no place for design to be held back by retro looks or nostalgia.

+100

Also we're talking about a design for a car that's not going to hit the market for a couple of years so the design now has to compensate for that. Theoretically the design has to last for at least 8-10 from now (assuming the next gen supra has a life cycle of 6-7 years).

By that time the mid engined corvette will be out already so we definitely need a very forward looking mkv supra design.

I just had a nasty thought!

With Ford GT using an engine based on their race winning Daytona Prototype, wouldn't that be cool if Toyota did the same...? They haven't announced the engine yet, so there's time to follow suit.

I'm sure each of us have a "wish list" for the hopeful upcoming Supra. For the most part I love the styling of the FT1 concept, I do think both the front and rear end could use some tweaking, though. But that's subjective. As for specifics:

Makers:
Priced between $50-60K
>400HP Turbo 6 (V or inline)
<3500lbs
RWD
2+2 seating
Manual transmission offered (DCT only may not be deal breaker, but I would be disappointed. Call me old school.)

Breakers:
>$70K
Hybrid
AWD

I really, really hope the AWD hybrid rumors are just that...rumors. If true, that'd most certainly put the price point over $70K and lose my interest. It will ultimately have to hit on the majority of my wants to win me over a GT350 or M4 which I think this car should be benchmarking.

Makers:
- $50-60k
- 2+2 seats
- Retractable spoiler
- 400+ hp
- >3600 lbs
- Look 75% or more like the concept
- manual option. DCT only would be dissapointing but would still consider.

Beakers:
- $65k +
- No Manual + No DCT. Meaning an 8 speed Auto.
- BMW engine with no Toyota changes made to it.
- does not look like concept or good at all.

My dealbreakers would be:
  1. Not enough power (sub-450, but honestly I'd be disappointed if it was sub-500).
  2. No proper dual clutch transmission.
  3. Obscene price (six figures).
  4. Neutered styling.
I would love to see:
  1. Big power (500+ horsepower with ample torque).
  2. Light weight.
  3. Extensive carbon fiber.
  4. Active aerodynamics.
  5. Carbon ceramic option.
  6. Adjustable suspension.
  7. Large gas tank.
  8. Overdrive gear for fuel efficiency.
  9. Mark levinson or similar audio.

Makers:
- Use the Supra nameplate
- $55-60k
- 2+2 seats
- Retractable spoiler
- Targa top
- 500+ hp
- >3200 lbs
- Look like 90% or more like the concept
- Manual please!
- 2017 or sooner :D

Beakers:
- BMW's motor (but would still consider)
- $70k +
- No Manual
- Looks boring and or nothing like the FT-1 concept
- 4,000 lbs like RC-F
- AWD

2018 and after would definitely be a deal breaker for me. I can't wait that long.

Also needs to be 3300 pounds or under and above 475hp for me to seriously consider it. Less important, but I have faith the design will be good.

If it really took until 2018 for this car to come out that would be one of the longer concept-to-production launches I can remember and the car would have lost all the momentum and interest it had early on. But I don't expect it to take that long. The BMW Z3/Z4 is set to be replaced before that so the platform will have been done with plenty of time to launch the new Supra in a year or two.
