After 30 years driving manual, the ZF 8 auto is great and shifts are super fast.. Not sure I could go back to manual after the auto in the supra.

Perhaps with the Yaris GR a nice little turbo awd, but as I'm getting older, I feel I am past the era of awd hatch and stiff clutches which would be felt in my knee for days after.
To each their own. Itā€™s totally understandable but there are still those of us who prefer a manual over an automatic in a two seater sportscar that cannot take the place of a more practical daily driver.

Fast shifting still isnā€™t the same as the human doing the shifting.

However now we do have the advantage of extremely fast and efficient automatics being an excellent option. Where I get frustrated is that just when they (automatics) have become as good as they currently are... now more often than not they are no longer options on the order sheet but rather your only given choice. Itā€™s understandable in common everyday vehicles but itā€™s not understandable in specialty high performance cars that arenā€™t something like an R35 or McLaren.

As for stiff clutches I tend to agree with you there. Iā€™ve tried a few and I prefer stock clutch pedal effort and for higher rated capacity without much more pedal effort than stock a twin-plate clutch is the way to go. I daily with one and itā€™s perfect and easy to use.

Anyway there will be plenty of time in not too many years when nearly all new vehicles will be hybrids and full EVs thus having zero chances of getting manual transmission options.

Thatā€™s why right now if a sportscar, hot hatch, muscle car or supercar can get a manual option it should because in not too long it will not be a possible option any longer.

2024
2.0 gets the 48-volt motor-generator
200 GRIM model at $120k getting all the best BMW tech
interior updates to latest iDrive (for android auto support)

2025

one thing from the GRIM tech in the special edition
last model before hybrid i6 supra with Mazda

update:
Since the thread is just speculation, this is just my guess of the timeline. I plan on waiting til Feb to check the 2022 updates and buy that version later in 2021. I'll sell it for the second year hybrid supra (with Mazda). Toyota and Mazda are preparing to go all hybrid/EV by 2030, and Tesla is trying to release a 25k car by 2023-ish. Sports cars in this price range will always be hybrid in the future

If North America gets even that many GRMNā€™s it will go a LONG way even for those who cannot afford it themselves. It would mean there is a smog-friendly U.S. Supra S58 configuration that people can at least try to recreate with a lot of creative BMW and Toyota parts bin rummaging.

If we do not get a North American Supra GRMN with the S58 then it will be considerably harder to do that like a factory clone.

For 2022 a manual would be nice to see... Perhaps a slight power bump isn't out of the question. :dunno: Now back to reality probably another special limited edition, the latest iDrive, and a fix for that darn buffeting issue is more likely imo.

A manual on both the 2.0 and 3.0 are the most important things needed at this point. Itā€™s not a rational or practical car to begin with, the people interested in a Supra want this option and there are only five model years left within which to offer manual transmissions in the Supra. Itā€™ll never be possible again with a future hybrid A100 series.

After that... itā€™s whatever they want the GRMN to be.

The wind buffeting seems like it will be an easy fix for Toyota and Magna-Steyer.

Someone at Toyota should be fired if they don't fix the wind buffeting considering how easy it is to take care of. They should add a way to open the trunk/hatch from the outside while they are at it.

I am guessing they might add the 48V mild hybrid system the BMW has or is getting? And maybe some more chassis tuning.

Sorry to bump this thread without any new information. But I feel like we should have heard something by now. It was around this time last year they broke the news about the 2021 Supra.

I'm waiting to hear if there will be a slight refresh in 2023 model year/what they are updating for 2022 model year

Well I did a survey for toyota and told them to fix some stuff (wind buffering, unlockable ECU) so I can guarantee those won't be updated for 2022 now that I told them.

sounds to me that if they were asking you that recently then they are planning on making big changes for the refresh in 2022
