First let’s stop here. For the safety of others on the road and your gf. Can she handle a car with this much power and tq? What has she driven before prior? I don’t want to see your gf or anybody hurt on the road...

I don’t know how far you’re from New Jersey but go get your Supra from Hackensack Toyota. They have several Premium 3.0 models at $6K below MSRP. This dealership has friendly straight forward sales people. Here is a link.

Within driving distance. Thanks for the info!

We'll see how we do locally but may end up buying out of state. The dealer today has 6 in stock (2 premiums) so curious if they will try to pull the same BS.

Despite titles, we are in our 40s (I'm almost out lol) so I don't worry that she is a responsible driver (way more than me lol!).

That said, she lived in the city without a car for nearly 20 years - last one was a Ford Ranger so she's used to this kind of power :D j/k.

It will be an adjustment and will take getting used to but I'm confident she can.

My biggest fear is she won't go above 3k RPMs ;)

There are too many deals in other states to pay over MSRP. Even if you have the car shipped to you for $1500 its still worth it to buy somewhere else.

-RJM
Curious - do you even have to go to an out of state dealer or can you do the entire transaction remote and have it shipped?

The gentleman who bought my E46 M3 was in CA and we did the entire transaction remotely and he had the car picked up and shipped so I would imagine a dealer could do the same?

Its all done remote. Since Covid hit dealers have changed methods to keep business going. They overnight the paperwork you sign it and then overnight it back. The sales person also helps get the car on the transport truck. They take pictures and send them to you so you know the condition of the car when it left.

Its a slick deal and makes buying out of state less stressful.

That's great to hear -thanks for the info.

We both walked out of the dealer yesterday thinking he was trying to talk us out of buying it.

Going to dealer #2 in a few hours so we'll see how that goes but remote buying is a very attractive option.

And make sure she isn't applying her makeup and drinking coffee or talking to her best friend while driving........

Sorry I couldn't resist, I find this reply funny and trust me I don't take offence to it either. I would hear this all the time when I pulled up on my R1, and then buzz them when they braked too early on the first corner.

Ok so back from Dealer #2.

They had a white 3.0 Premium which she was interested in buying.

The salesman (kid) first came back saying they usually do $5k over sticker but were able to give it to us for MSRP (which also negated the $1500 cash back offer from Toyota ). No thanks.

As we were ready to walk his supervisor came out and tried the normal tactics. I basically said give us a price. They came back with 9% off, we countered with 12%, they said no and we walked.

Keep in mind this particular car was sitting on the lot so long they needed to replace the battery and it was filthy from sitting. They had like 6 others (of different colors/flavors) on the lot. The sales kid also tried to tell us they are the only dealership in my area who has Supras and then we told him how Dealer #1 had 2 and we test drove last night but whatever.

I think 9% discount (which is separate from the $1500 cash back from Toyota) is a fair deal but when they tried the high pressure BS on us like "If I go back to my manager with this offer I'm charging your credit card" (I said you better not lol) I didn't get a warm and fuzzy about this particular dealer. Also, they were visibly upset when we said "no thank you" instead of saying "Hey give us a call if you change your mind".

So we'll check out other dealers on the internet and see what's up.

On a positive note, she has decided on a color - Absolute Zero. I don't normally like white cars but I agree this is the best color option.

Yeesh, sounds like the dealerships in my area. Glad you guys have decided on a color. The white is definetly a good looking color for this car. i went with the A91 Refraction Blue, but if that color wasnt available i would have gotten the white as well.

Definitely stick to your guns. I managed to get mine for Invoice when every other dealer in my area was charging between 7-15k markup.

When you do manage to get one, remember Toyota also gives all new Supra owners a complimentary track day with NASA. Even if you never plan to track the car, i would highly recommend going at least once (especially since its free), as this car is a beast around the track.

Yea we both got an "ick" feeling from them. It was a good deal but didn't care for the way we were treated.

Looking online, I'm not seeing the config she wants which is: a 3.0 Premium with Driver Assist in Absolute Zero. Hopefully the one today wasn't the last shot.

Edit - Found one from the link posted above. About an hour away. Will call tomorrow:

Ok couldn't wait for tomorrow so took a test drive tonight. My GF loved the car.

However, the salesman (we're in NY) said:

1) Price is $10k - $15k over sticker!
2) A Toyota plant shut down and they cannot order cars and hardly get any Supras.
3) He also said they fly off the lot but the two they had were nearly there a year?
4) Said all dealerships (regardless of make) are the same due to low supply as a result of COVID.

Can anyone offer any input? I don't think these are selling as hot as he made out but who knows.
It's your (or your GF's) car. If she thinks the car is worth the price, I'd recommend you just buy it. It is true that there is a major shortage of semi-conductors and resins in the auto industry that is shutting down factories world wide so it can be a very long wait.
