I think most tuning is done from OTS files. You just use the files based on your Mod variables. From what I’ve seen for tuning the GR Supra is that a lot is based on removing torque blocking guard bands put on by the factory. That and every tuner adds their own little spice to Fuel and Timing maps.

I would guess you are correct. id kind of like to know their methodology as they remove torque safeties and then add boost and timing.

Post upon post of blown turbos and blown motors; multiple vendors here stacking cheese writing your ecu files, and not a single one in here to discuss tuning.

the smart money people are noticing this.

They are probably making thousands of dollars off of us by giving us OTS tunes and saying they are “custom tunes” lol ? or making false promises to fly out to dyno tune you but then using the “Coviad” excuse after you and 4 other a90 friends took time off from work and booked a local dyno shop. Just saying...... Lol ?

Guys tuners are busy people, they don’t have time to be surfing internet threads to answer all concerns. Its best to contact them directly. Some of them even work late hours on weekends and give up their family time just to make sure Customers are satisfied.

I've been on the FB pages for a bit. I can honestly say i havent seen any blown up motor posts. Got any links? Curious to know which tuners are blowing them up.

I've only heard of transmission issues with cars pushing 600+ tq and the occasional broke axle. Seen a few turbo failures but a few were stock cars and i've heard of one blown a turbo due to a botched charge pipe. used to be a couple tuners on here Marin and Twisted tuning, but they are much more active on FB.

there are at least 2 popped motors on this forum and at least blown turbo, and Im not going out of my way to find them.

how did a “botched charge pipe” cause your turbo to fail?

charge pipe apparently didn’t seat correctly and the turbo just kept trying to send more boost.

I’ve seen one here blown up due to meth.A few of the guys on FB that pushing 800+ have blown stock motors, but that’s expected at the power level. Felt like I did a lot of searching when i first decided to tune and I can say I couldn’t find any stock turbo dp/tune cars blowing motors.

I feel like the DME on these cars have a lot of fail safes in place. I talked to a guy at the track that runs e50 and 150 shot of nitrous with numerous drag strip passes and the car runs like a top. I’ve got another local Supra that runs a top mount 6466, meth and port injection that beats the car and probably has 150 flashes to the DME from tuning that surprisingly still runs like a champ. Even in the b58 bmw groups there isn’t that many engine failures.

I’m seriously very paranoid about blowing a motor up. But the more I’ve read, it seems pretty hard to do

i have admittedly taken this further than is constructive; but if even a few people ask more questions of their tuner before giving over their cash, then it is a win in my book.

theyre no busier than other people, honestly. But to your point, you are correct there is a degree of futility to a thread like this. Knew that going in, but if one or two folks stop and think thats a win in my book.

ill be fair and say i dont know for 100% what caused the motors to fail because i didnt do the tear down. But from reading one post and talking to the owner of the other id bet an entire paycheck on a cracked piston from engine knock. combine this with the fact i know for a fact there are tuners on this forum who have a history of desensitizing or straight up de activating knock sensors. This is also how motors on meth have a tendency to fail (assuming its a piston failure and not a rod failure from too much tq)

bootmod is fine. My advice is to stick with people who have been doing bmw’s RELIABLY for a long haul. Research on bmw forums. The problem you guys are having now, is that every tom dick and harry tuner for subarus and evos and hondas has piled onto the supra like a white chick in a brazzer’s gang bang video. Not all of these outfits know what the fuck they are doing with valvetronic.

there are some truly multidiscipline tuners out there, but a lot are just doing bandit tunes: add a little boost, add a little timing, add some fuel-> market with a smooth edit youtube video.

b58 is a robust platform. But you need to understand the boost control logic to tune it correctly.

anyway. Just be smart. The guy who makes the most power on a hero pull is usually not the best tuner for a car you plan on keeping any length of time.

Supply & Demand. I've heard of a handful of good tuners mentioned just in this forum for B58 platforms (and to be honest, their names come up elsewhere as well)..a handful!
If tuning is a serious business and more complicated now with all electrogizmos, then tuner needs to take their time in fine-tuning things especially if the customer really knows what they want and wants to squeeze every hp out of the car.. Multiple dyno-runs or data collection/analysis.... So, I think it takes a bit more time than you give them credit for.
Even if everyone comes up to them with the same recipe, x-brand downpipe, y-brand intake and make me go fast boom boom, which what most people have here (except serious tuners, which already kindda know more in-depth knowledge), then they still need to account for differences in the vehicle per manufacturing tolerances/differences..

I'll say this though, I'm sure if customer comes to these rather busy tuners and says "I want it to go faster so I can beat my cousin Joe's Civic" with not much detail, than slapping an OTS or slightly tweaked is, I'm going to assume, what most tuners do, maybe with just a few tuning runs and I cannot find any fault in that tbh.. Then same dude goes out and slaps jb4 turns the dial all the way, bam, engine blown... I believe almost a year ago I've seen a video on YouTube, overseas Supra, self-made tuner, blew the engine up... Even most accomplished can blow things up if a part was prone to failure or if they're too ambitious...

I agree with the rest of your comments..

I’m with OP on this one. A lot of potential clients don’t know who to go with. The entire “availability” arguments as a positive to go with one shop is laughable to me… why aren’t people waiting on you? Why are people waiting months for Botti?

Agreed again on the “busy” aspect. I work 70-100 hours a week too, I get it. Still have time to enjoy my car.

Tuners, sell yourselves. What sets you apart? A lot of people don’t know anything about this stuff. If your workload prohibits you from seeking money “in the future” you haven’t paid attention to Carnegie. Give me a reason to recommend you to all the Supra and BMW owners I know who aren’t on these forums. There are plenty.

Are you tuned? If so who did you go with and why?

Nope. Locked. I have a few in mind that I’d like to give money to once cracked open, but haven’t decided completely. I surely know a few I will avoid like the plague.
