That’s design risk mitigation at its best. The part probably failed during the FEA study and had a high RPN in the dFMEA. They said F’-it well just cover our butts with the owners manual. ?Just out of curiousity, was everything warm when you removed the cover? Being that you were doing an oil change, I’d think so.
Asking because of this from the service manual, though it’s mostly talking about damage to the acoustic cover, not the valve cover.

Are you sure you broke it and it did not come that way from the Factory? I would tell them you took off the cover and saw it was broken. are you sure you did it? most replying to this thread do not understand how this could have happened.

100% sure I broke it. Heard it happen when I lifted it.

I'm still not getting this - how does a broken engine cover expose internal parts of the engine?
(keep in mind the Supra in our fleet is not mine so I'm not as familiar with the engine compartment).
Want to make sure I don't make the same mistake when I have to change the oil.

The engine cover didn't snap, the post on the valve cover that holds the engine cover did.

To be clear, the cover didnt break the post it connects to did. The post that broke is like 3 inches high and is extruded from the valve cover. I lifted the cover off of the engine on the diagonal opposite corner. When it the cover popped up I went a bit too far putting too much leverage on the post and “snap”. It broke at the base where it connects to the VC. Thus an open hole to the oily bits.

You see the large opening on top of the VC? The tall post next to it. At its base is where it cracked.

?‍ Still don’t see it. Just take a better photo with it zoomed in and not a zoomed in photo of your overall photo. We all want to know what not to do and break the mounting points on the valve cover. Still not sure how the hell you did it. I taken mine off like 500 times.
