That’s design risk mitigation at its best. The part probably failed during the FEA study and had a high RPN in the dFMEA. They said F’-it well just cover our butts with the owners manual. ?Just out of curiousity, was everything warm when you removed the cover? Being that you were doing an oil change, I’d think so.
Asking because of this from the service manual, though it’s mostly talking about damage to the acoustic cover, not the valve cover.

The engine cover didn't snap, the post on the valve cover that holds the engine cover did.I'm still not getting this - how does a broken engine cover expose internal parts of the engine?
(keep in mind the Supra in our fleet is not mine so I'm not as familiar with the engine compartment).
Want to make sure I don't make the same mistake when I have to change the oil.
