Thats like hardware engineering 101. If it doesn’t do what you want you redesign it, you don’t push it out of its limits by tricking it. How many JB4s were shipped that just straight didn’t work out of the box? Users went through multiple units before one worked and the response was “oh some times it’s a bad unit”. So if you are willing to plug in a device that has not been properly tested into you 20k engine go for it. That kind of hardware will never touch my engines.

Sometimes patiences is worth it. Yeah the Russian dance isn’t great but that’s why I instantly got it tuned. I’m not willing to run a piggy back so sent it out. It’s not my daily so it’s not a problem. Personally I would just wait and have a stock car until a proper flashing solution came about then running a piggy back.
Cool. And that’s great for you, for some people it’s worth it. For others it isn’t. I am aware of one bad JB4.. basically in all of the forums. I’m aware of several sketch JB+s that got flashed with the wrong firmware. Whatever. Shit happens.

In any case, it’s cool that’s the direction you went, and wanted to go. Some of us are with you there. Some aren’t. Don’t discourage others away from something especially if you have no direct experience with it. I made 500whp with meth on JB4 reliably. I read the logs after every pass at the strip. Things were healthy.

I've never had a rwd car, and coming from a 2010 Honda Accord, this Supra feels really fast stock lol. I'm going to learn how to drive this car first before any performance mods.
My path was 2001 Ford Focus -> 2015 Honda Civic (also sometimes driving wife's 2018 Civic Hatch) -> Supra.

I'm 100% with you on that, daily driving it as-is has been an absolute treat. I'm planning on driving my first season of AutoX this spring to get to learn it.

Its on public roads so the old racing fart in me says who cares...But the adolescent in me says fresh air and a JB4 are very simple friendly installations to a daily driver. From the replies its obvious you have plenty of options.
Its a great car stock or not;)

I have a tunable 2020 but still on the fence about getting it tuned.

I'm still enjoying the stock power especially since it's my daily and traffic/construction rarely grants the opportunity to fully open her up anyway.

The only power related mods I've done is an HKS panel air filter and an AA catted downpipe for sound and turbo spool/throttle response. I've tried 3 different catbacks and they were all too boomy/bassy for my taste. While the OEM sound is great, it's a bit tame. The DP gives it the perfect volume.

Luckily I came from a BRZ. So the stock power is plenty for me...for now. I'm sure if I were coming from something like a Hellcat, I'd get it tuned right away.

I wish there were a "try-it-before-you-buy-it" tune to see what I might be missing out on.

Sadly, there's no warrantied tune like APR Plus which offers to the Audi, VW and Porsche crowd. That would be an easier pill to swallow for those of us concerned with reliability and liability.

Which three exhausts did you try?

I'm personally not a hp chaser, I care a lot more about reliability, usable power, and power delivery. I have a motorcycle so my MKV is my more practical daily/track vehicle and my (performance)mods are as follows..

-AWE Touring resonated exhaust
-Autowerk catless DP
-AFE drop in Pro 5R filter
-BM3 Stage 2 OTS map

Future mods are 265/285 tires, FTP intake pipe and maaaaybe a FTP chargepipe(B58 doesn't really need an upgraded CP but it looks cool) and I may go with a larger heat exchanger to keep my IAT's in line, and I plan on stopping at that.

I may go custom with BM3 at some point just to dial my mods in but I'm pretty happy with the power of my car now. I agree, these cars are pretty boring in stock form; I didn't realize how sluggish they were until I was driving home after doing the brake recall which deleted my tune(had to get a bench unlock to reinstall it). Just keep the mods simple and go with a tuning platform that has a good track record and you'll be golden.

Kids like this are exactly the reason the salvage thread is 70 pages long. lol.

JB4 is more than capable. The only folks that should stay away from a JB4 don't understand what it's doing or how to read logs. Modern engines are not some mystery box doing gods work or whatever.

JB4 is absolutely safe - it's just a tool, and saying anything else is FUD.
Jb4 is totally safe when used properly, but just like with even a custom tune, when used "incorrectly" things can go wrong very quickly, but that seems to be the case with just about everything in life. Personally a flash tune is preferred to JB4, in most cases, but jb4's are not bad and can be used effectively especially when coupled with that @Jesse DaBears sauce. Just do proper research about what you want and what features you are looking for in a tune, as a jb4 can not do all the things a real flash can in regards to cold start, burble, etc

This is really good setup, just like mine, AWE touring resonated, catless, had bm3 stage 2 93, but switched to ecutek custom, I have a chargepipe sitting in the garage which I will prob never install, like you said, not really needed, this is not an n55 LOL, and I think HE is in my neat future as south florida temps are warm and I managed to throw this thing into limp mode after 20-30 minutes off some aggressive ass high speed pulls LOL, but hey at least it did what it was supposed and protected itself till it cooled down.

Thank you, I like simplicity lol. I thought about going Ecutek but I already spent money on BM3, I recall reading they've finally implemented flashing from your cell phone which is cool. I'm surprised I don't see more people talking about upgrading their heat exchangers on here. If aftermarket intake manifolds didn't cost $4k+ I would have gone that route as well lol.

I recommend you drive your car and enjoy it first and learn your car while stock. People on here are so fast in just throwing parts at it. The car is more than capable out of the box.
That’s my plan. I’m just trying to learn while I get a feel for the car.

Some good answers here. I'm going to give a different one: If you want to use some of that power you are and will be producing (after some of the upgrades mentioned here), including being able to experience the full handling capabilities of the car, I highly recommend buying new tires for the vehicle. Something along the lines of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 - there is a reason that many of the press cars showed up with these tires specifically.

Which tuning platform/tuner has the best drivability? Can’t deal with idle surging, bucking, stalling etc.
