Hi all,

So I replaced my brake pads and rotors a few weeks ago and now I am hearing some odd noise when I press the brakes. It happens only when I change from going forward to reverse, then again from reverse to forward. So for example, I am going to reverse so I press the brakes, start to reverse then clunk, I hear the sound. Then go from reverse to forward, I still have my foot on the brakes, shift to drive, release the brakes then clunk, I hear that sound again. It only happens when changing direction. After going forwards I never hear any noise again while Iā€™m driving unless I try to reverse.

Have any of you guys that have changed your pads heard any weird noise like this? I checked for anything that could be loose and couldnā€™t find any obvious issue. I wonder if itā€™s because the new pads are not glued to the calipers like OEM?

Coincidentally, I posted this on a different thread just this morning:

I did have an issue with the Z23s though. A couple of months after installation I noticed a ā€œrandomā€ loud clunk in the front when I stepped on the brakes at low speeds. It turned out to be due to the backing of the front pads not being precisely cut, so they shifted a bit when the car was moving in one direction and suddenly released if I changed directions. What seemed random was actually consisten when going from drive to reverse or vice versa. I contacted the manufacturer and they sent a new set of front pads, free of charge.

And that fixed the issue for you? Mine are Powerstop also, but the Z26 model.

Different car, but on my Golf-R I changed to some Brembo pads as I did not like the factory pad's super dust.. However I swapped pads again to some Japanese brand as there was clunking noises coming from the Brembo pads while changing directions and rattling over smaller bumps.. Pads functioned fine, it was just annoying over bumps.

If you still have your stock pads you may want to swap pads temporarily to see if it still makes the noise.. just a process of elimination. then try some other pads if it still bothers you.

Have that issue occasionally with Project Mu pads. Never had the issue with CSG
Thanks thatā€™s good to know. I just wish those CSG pads werenā€™t so expensive. I might have to try them though

Great idea! I did keep the stock pads and rotors since they only have about 6000 miles on them. Iā€™ll give this a try and see what happens.

sooooooo worth it when you are at 150 on the straight and you like to brake at #3 marker and the turn one is 70 mph. and you want to do that for 10 laps in a row

I had that when I installed Hawk HP+ pads on my STi. The first time I would touch the brakes after changing direction (F to R or R to F) they'd shift in the calipers and make a clack sound. I just lived with it.

You make a pretty convincing point there. Lol. I mean itā€™s not that these pads arenā€™t working correctly, itā€™s just annoying that they do this. So do you think itā€™s just that CSG makes the pads sit tighter in the caliper slots?

The Supra is my fist sports car with calipers like these so itā€™s good to know that itā€™s not something I did wrong on the install. I checked and the pads do move a little bit in that slot

I change out pads every 4 months or so. i have tried stock, Hawk, Mu, CGS, and probably at least one more. CGS are the very best- and I am not alone in this. MU 999 are really really good also

But to answer your question- could just be a loose set for whatever reason, who knows. If you beat on your car at the track things are going to rattle and clunk. I honestly do not know how this thing has put up with my abuse (knocking on wood) for 2 seasons+

did your new brake pads came with shims? if it didn't did you transfer shims from OEM to new?

btw, if you have R1concept or powerstop brake pads... never mind..
Yeah they are Powerstop and they came with new hardware that looks exactly like stock replacements.
