We're potentially on a level here with the signing keys for copy protection on Blu-ray or HD-DVD getting leaked. Breaking a modern encryption/signing scheme with no insider info might as well be impossible.

The fact Femto need the ECU physically (no remote option at all) implies they're either using leaked software that they don't want to reveal, or physically doing something to the ECU (maybe a voltage hack as it boots to make it skip some signature validation?). The former seems more likely to me...

Without cloning you can't utilise all the features of racerom/MHD map switching/bm3 equivalent, as far as I can tell from talking to them. Unless those companies are willing to send their code (probably bootloader code? Unsure) to femto. Which they're not willing to do for obvious reasons.

That's why I reckon they have Bosch/BMW tools that let them memory dump it, and rewrite stuff. They can't let that tool(s) go, it'd be open season and they'd lose their market, plus they'd probably get sued the crap out of and other companies would probably also. For now they have deniability because what they're doing is a mystery - I'm just speculating.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath, I think it's gonna be a few years before we see the ability to do this without Femto. BFlash teased us with "soon" but then it's been radio silence. Luckily the fact the car is a Supra probably makes no difference - once the ECU for new BMWs is workable, ours should be too.
This, as far as I understand it, is the most accurate representation of what's going on that I've seen. A+++ Post, would read again.

Following with bated breath…if this car won’t ever be tunable this may change things for me.

Yes, if you opt to do the cloning service. They do have a cheaper option to do a “partial unlock” that gives you access to use BM3 or MHD only.

Why not just send to femto?
I was under the impression it was just a partial unlock with one map loaded and that’s it. But now I hear Femto does the full unlock and I can use MHD or bootmod3 or whatever I want?

Major reasons for me? Cost / Downtime,

I won't be spending nearly $5,000 on non-value-add services on principle. Excluding shipping costs, this should be a $500 bench unlock type of service. Me abstaining won't affect their business but knowing I'm sending $$$ to some bros using stolen software for 30 seconds of work with a click of a button irks me.

That $5000 is turbo kit, a built transmission, another few weekends at the track... must be too poor for this kind of thing!

$5k if you use Visconti. But for just a basic unlock and OTS tune it’s likely half that price or less.

still 5 days of downtime while you wait for Femto to unlock and ship back from Finland

Hook me up with the right contact Gil! Looking for ECUTEK + unlock and NOT losing an arm and a leg! Time =/= Money so I'll likely wait to see what the winter brings while the car is in storage but if someone were to do it now for half what I said above I'll pay it right now.

As of yesterday according to Visconti unlock only, no clones available, “waiting list”

no response when inquired about how long, or if deposit required to get on list

getting kind of frustrated with this platform…ordered a jb4 to hold me over till I put it away for winter (@Jesse DaBears I’ll be hitting you up soon)…if there aren’t any real, logical tuning solutions by spring I’m just gonna move on to something else

I mean I feel you, but personally, I wouldn’t be able to move away from the B58 platform. It is literally light years ahead of everything else.

Similar situation, especially if an s58 version is coming out, by then both will be tunable! I won’t have to build the engine or add PI for 800+

I will keep on waiting to hear back from these bflash folks returning from holiday!

You don't even consider that they spent countless nights and resources trying to find a workaround (read hack) and had success?
And they only do it on-site, so there is no risk of someone stealing the technology?
