Thanks for sharing, great read! Never would have thought b58 sounds better than the s58! :)

I can`t get past how bad the S58 sounds. The B58 is probably the best sounding 6 cylinder on the market.

It might be an unpopular opinion but I think the N55 with the DCT sounds the best

S58 is a racing engine compared to the B58 tractor engine. Revs matter and in time we will have 9,000 rpm S58 when the B58 tractor won’t push past 7,500 without trouble.
Everyone’s opinion on sound will change when they hear the S58 spin up and leverage the inherent benefit of being a i6.
Low end torque is a waste in racing, only helps for mileage and towing. Major determent of sharing with the diesel platform.

However unlikely a S58 in the J29 is, it is on my short list if the price is right.

How much time is any production sports car, super car or hyper car spending above 7000rpm?

That is why the B58 makes sense for Toyota. It is exactly like the 2JZ. A reliable tractor motor that does a damn good job in a street car but can be built to trash a “race car”.

I do not envy the S58.

For me the Supra is about the sound, the looks and the fun.

It’s easier to be fast as hell in the S58, but I’m not a fan of the sound or a 4000lb sports car that looks like it has the automotive equivalent of Down syndrome.

Time spent above a given rpm is a function of maximum rpm. Time spent above 7,000 when you have 9,000rpm? Every time you accelerate heavily.

While my car spends most of its life below half revs, I bought it to be exciting which is a function of rpm.
Can you short shift the tractor with enough gears? Of course! Is it exhilarating? Absolutely not.
