*watching this thread closely - thanks for the info

1200 miles in here, with no issues yet. No power mods but have downpipe/exhaust in the mail and have been shopping tuning opportunities the last 2 days - sounds like waiting on the tune is advised.

Going to post this elsewhere but as it pertains here..:
Took the 20’ into the local dealer for service, where we bought the MT 60 days ago, and wound up leaving prior to service. After having an issue with their service writer previously, we were half-cocked. Long story short - they wouldn’t let me meet the Supra tech and insinuated any jabroni would do the work. (I just wanted to tip the guy and give a heads up on the mods) - but no dice.
So far - we’ve had poor luck with Toyota service on the Supras. I hope your dealer does better.
If you do end up tuning before getting a clutch I'd say try to target 550ft-lb max. Until more people start tuning we won't know the real limit but at least its under the only information I've been able to share.

unfortunately it isn’t the dealer they are awesome and I have a great relationship with them. It’s corporate being difficult
Hearing stuff like this makes me wish I never got the extended warranty since it seems they'll do everything in their power not to fix the more costly defects.

Following. A buddy is tuned pushing 610 ft-lb and has started to slip after the past weekend at the drag strip.
Do you know which gear your buddy started to slip in? The sweet spot might be mid 500tq range.

Seems the manual trans physical limit is somewhat close to some automatic trans in which they started to slip around the low 600tq range. Although, Twisted Tuning reported the automatic trans 6th gear to slip around 750-760tq.

Not bad for a stock clutch IMO. I'd imagine as more people start to push the limits of the manual trans, we'll see more aftermarket support in the next few months or hopefully later this year.

No clue on the specific gear.

The autos started to handle more torque after the tunes for the ZF came out but we're stuck with just waiting for a clutch to be available, OEM or not :banghead:. Would be nice if OS Giken came out with a nice twin plate, they typically handle good torque without compromising comfort.

You can cancel the extended warranty anytime up until 3 years/36k miles. It doesn't take effect until after the new car warranty runs out.

I’m curious if this has anything to do with the “gear shift assistant.” Mine seems to hang the rpm’s when upshifting with this enabled. If you turn off the rev matching it drops the rpm’s quicker between shifts and prevents any funny rev hang behavior. If you are not deliberate with your clutch pedal it can burn the clutch when trying to match speeds while the clutch is partially engaged. I’ve definitely done it a few times and noticed a smell. I’ve never had slippage all the way to redline though.

my Two cents

If anything that should make upshifts smoother, since it holds the engine RPM where it needs to be for the next gear at the current road speed. As long as you don't delay, it should be a very good match (has been in my experience).

I'd want a tech to check over the clutch hydraulics (both cylinders and the plumbing) to rule out any simple/easy issues. That should not be too complicated. If that looks OK, only then worry about other things that are part of the clutch mechanicals.

Unfortunately, if the dealer does a teardown, they aren't likely to find a problem. They'll probably only see the results of slipping (ie. hot spots).

I sense that you have prior experience with manual transmissions. Enough so that you can tell the difference between defect and out right abuse but that assumption may be wrong. While I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt, the dealer would be the one sticking their neck out and are less inclined. Reach out to Toyota customer care and get a conversation started with them.
Yes I’ve owned multiple and regularly drive a manual gen v viper (dads toy) I have been driving standard transmissions since I was 13 lol. And this feels like a defect as with the affects of a slipping clutch it is easy to replicate but in my case it feels like a intermittent failure due to the fact that it’ll slip and immediately engage once I let off and re apply throttle and if I do another pull in the same gear even it’ll hold. Thinking slave cylinder

Could also be a bad seal that's letting a bit of gear oil to get on the clutch disk intermittently. I had that issue once and most of the time the clutch worked just fine. But every once in a while, it would slip a lot under hard acceleration, usually in 4th, 5th, and 6th.

Quite odd that it'd already be slipping. & quite frustrating at how the dealership is handling it. Why would you need to pay thousands for the teardown? Seems idiotic since the car is essentially brand new.

Also, what front lip is that in the original post? Looks great.

From what you're describing this definitely sounds like it might be the culprit. If it was the clutch itself I would think the issue would be more noticeable and gradually gets worse and worse as opposed to kind of an "on/off" symptom that you're describing. Hopefully Toyota steps it up for you. I haven't been impressed with their dealerships or service at all yet.
