I bought a 2021 Supra 2.0 (w tech package) in November 2021 for $2500 off the MSRP. That was a pretty good deal at the time TBH.

Today I checked the Carmax selling price and I can sell the car for a $3K profit! They offered me $43,400. I would get all of my down payment back plus an additional $3K. That 3.0 manual (or even a new M2 if I wait a bit longer to increase my downpayment) is really calling my name, BUT the interest rates really suck right now! Even with great credit the interest rates are over 6% at my credit union. My current interest rate is 2.7%.

Should I sell it, sock the money away and wait for things to calm down and get the manual version later on in the year? I still have a fun 95 Miata to drive around as well as my Lexus IS300.

I really like my 2.0, but it is EXTREMELY tempting to make $3K after owning the car for ~18 months.

Decisions, decisions........

yes
prime rate went up 0.25% yesterday, continuing its trend of gradually increasing.
interest rates won't be getting any better-- we're currently on a bank scare and there's a 'global banking crisis'

friend, it's up to you.
be cautious and hold on to your valuables
or
world is ending anyway, might as well buy an incredible car

you want an opinion? do it lol. you can refinance with another bank down the line, EZ
with awesome cars like the NA miata and IS300, i'd say stick to ZF8 and get an auto

My unsolicited advice: Keep it. Carmax always gives an "online offer" that is too good to be true, then when you bring it in they nickel-and-dime you to what their actual reserve price is. You may still come away on top, but probably not by $3K (maybe around $1K, or less). Financing is also unattractive, currently, and 2.7% is not a bad rate and would be difficult to refinance at something lower. You got a great deal on your 2.0 and you did very well. Consider making extra payments to principal (if you can), and then own outright in less than 5 years. If all goes well market value will still be around %60-%70 of MSRP assuming good condition and no mods, and could sell it privately then.

Sports cars aren’t really logical purchases. Seems odd to me to get to the point where you have a stable of toy cars but then stress over what likely amounts to less than $75/mo. where the profit minus your increased interest on a new loan likely doesn’t cancel out for years.

I say that either you derive enough value from the total cost of ownership of a discretionary material item or you don’t.

If you haven’t driven a 3.0, do it asap and your decision should be easy either way.

But all that aside, getting out of a car while making profit is a rare occurrence, so don’t waste it if you’re sure you’re ready for something else.

The question is, do you LOVE that vehicle? If you love it, who cares about the money side, it's about your enjoyment. But if you only like it, and would be open to upgrading to something else (doesn't have to be a 6 cylinder Supra) then I'd say sell it, get that cash, and put it towards something that will stir your soul a bit more. As you pointed out, it's not like you'll be stuck taking the bus.

I have driven a ZF8 Supra. It didn't "wow me" as compared to the 2.0. In fact, I think that the 2.0 handles better. I would prefer a manual transmission however!

Sell the car !
3.0 premium is the way to go
This will be an emotional purchase anyways so no point in looking at this logically

I think you already have your answer then. Watch out for the markups nowadays though, so finding an MSRP manual might be rough for you or at least months of waiting

Same here or even more when they see it in person. If someone is getting less than CARMAX online offer its because they weren't honest with the state of the car when they filled out the online questionnaire. And most dealerships will honor the Carmax appraisal if you choose to trade instead of waiting on the CARMAX check to clear. I sold my paid off 2016 Tundra to CARMAX in 2021 and made 10K over what I paid for it and bought a 22 BRZ paid in full because at the time Supras in my area were selling for 10 to 20K over MsRP so got the 22'BRZ for the time being. And 12 months later > traded the BRZ for a 23' Supra 3.0 Premium with all available Options for 59K and no mark ups and being i got 30K for BRZ, im only financing 29K for a 2023 GR supra which isnt to bad, the rates were high with dealership but as soon as I left I refinanced with my bank for way lower. I'd say keep the car if you love it, trade it if it's not what you really want. I really wanted the 2020 GR Supra but waited until they were selling for a more reasonable price which ended up better because now I have the GR Supra that has more HorsePower, Better looking Rims, better steering and suspension upgrades than if I bought the 2020 model. At the end of the day it's up to what you want and how long your willing to wait to get what you want.

I had something similar to you. Got a base 2.0L Supra under MSRP with low interest rate in late 2021. I really liked the way the car looked and the handling was amazing. Got a offer for more than I paid but when tax I broke even. I wanted more power and the sound of the 3.0L is much better. Long term the 2.0L is just not something I wanted to own and seeing how ICE sports cars are going away this decade the 3.0L is what I want. I would sell and try to get a 3.0L when possible. I am currently on the list for a 3.0L at my local dealership.

Same here. I've sold them 4 cars and each one has come in exactly the same as the online offer. I should note that the last 3 times I did the offer via Edmunds which in-turn spit out the Carmax offer. According to folks at Carmax that often nets more than what they would offer directly.
