Ughhh Iā€™m conflicted on this. On one hand i want to use the 0w-20 because it is the manufacturer recommended and donā€™t want any trouble, they know better than me, and i can see newer cars having tighter tolerances. but on the other hand it seems too thin although Iā€™ve only owned older carsā€¦i worry they recommend thin oil for better gas mileage and by the time the watery oil catches up with wearing the engine out it wonā€™t be Toyotaā€™s problem anymore since it will be out of warranty.

anyone have thoughts on this / anyone used 0w-20 into the 100k + range? I wonder if going to 5w-30 will have any adverse effects

The USA is the only country with 0w-20 as the spec for the B58TU. Most countries specify 5w-30.

I have a 22 with no consumption issues. I did my second oil change with the Supra oil, but I think for the next one Iā€™ll switch over to 5w-30 because of the non US spec recommendation that zrk mentioned. Although as a daily I canā€™t imagine Iā€™m pushing it that hard

Did my usual "break in " oil change after the road trip back from Bend Oregon @850 miles
OEM BMW filter + 5w30 LiqiMoly Ceratec
The car is a semi daily and likely will see the track maybe once a year.
We'll see what the UOA Blackstone report comes back as after this oil change in about 6 months

How was the Blackstone report?
it was normal for the most part , it was not a lot of miles
Lead, copper all within normal spec
Water and contaminants minimal
I have since switched to Castrol Edge European formula 5W30
LMoly is not LL01 certified anymore
It is BMW LL01 certified and has good KV and HTHS characteristics
For a mostly street car it's the best oil IMHO

I'm looking to do my first oil change after my breaking in period on my A91 and have been debating if I should stick with the recommended 0w-20 or go with a 5w-30. My car is a weekend driver and Street car. I will never visit the track and maybe later this year I will tune it. What do you think about switching to 5w-30 so soon?

The factory oil weight is for fuel economy and is fine for a street car
The bmw engineers says it's ok , then I'd trust them
In my experience with bmw turbo engines, this being my 4th one, the factory 1yr/10k miles OCI is a bit long
I'd recommend 6mos/5k OCI and do an annual UOA just to see how your particular engine is doing
For a street car switching to 5W30 is perfectly fine, especially with a good C3 based oil with good HTHS , as it'll protect the engine better in the upper rev ranges
I just want some extra piece of mind that if I wanted to hoon around a back road that my oil gets a bit hot, it'll be better if it was a 30W vs a 20W, as oils do thin out over time

What are your thoughts on brands like Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 European spec?

I'm currently using Castrol edge euro formula 5W30 and it's been great
Used the same oil in a 5w40 weight on the previous S55 F80 and the UOA came back squeaky clean
Haven't had any experience with mobil 1
If you want an alt the penzoil platinum european is also a very good street oil in the 5W30W
