The MKV will never be better than the MKIV and it wasn't supposed to be but it's a damn good fun car.
The MKIV will never be better than the MKV and it wasn't supposed to be but it's a damn good fun car ?

Better: What are we talking about here. that 2JZ from factory sucked but was and is a bulletproof engine that forgave hundreds if not thousands of hp and that's why it's good?
From getgo you can track, autox, drag with minimal safety upgrades to MKV while having boost at all times.
Not sure who tracks/tracked MKIV in it's factory form apart from the Japanese. [*missing references; unvalidated claim; was so long ago can't recall]
Not talking about the 3S-GTE track version..
Sure one of the things that made MKIV special is that it could compete with Ferraris and Porsches at Japan track races and it was yet another amazing engineering artwork but again MKIV vs MKV... or I should say, "classic" vs modern.

My first car (27 years ago) was a ā€˜86 RX-7. That car kick started my love of sports cars, and cars in general. Almost immediately my dream car became the FD RX-7. I also loved the MKII MR2 (which ended up being my 2nd car), and of course the MKIV Supra. This was all way before the first Fast & Furious movie. Iā€™d say if anything that movie made me like cars, in particular the Supra, a little less. I found the street racing and tuning scene stupid, and didnā€™t really want any part in or association with either.

As time has gone on my wants and needs have changed as well. That means the FD is no longer my dream car, and I definitely wouldnā€™t take a MKIV Supra over a MKV. I donā€™t think that makes me a bad enthusiast. At the same time I can respect that someone might have the opposite take from mine, and Iā€™m glad for it. Itā€™s great to see the occasion MKIV, or even more rarely a FD on the road or parked somewhere.

Neither myself nor anyone I know ever got into Mark 4s because of the Fast and the Furious. I know everyone says that, but those cars were popular for making big power far before that movie came out. I don't see that the prices on them have gone up anymore than any other car from that area. I can't blame all the price increases on that franchise.
If all these Supra fans were Fast and Furious fans, all the cars would be orange.
Looking back, I don't see how that was much of an influence at all.
Thatā€™s just calling us older folks out @kaj. You know us guys and gals that bought import tuner magazines in the 90s and dreamed of owning A80 Supras, FD RX7s and the good ole 300 ZXā€¦ but in reality all we could afford back then were EG and EK civics so we fixed those up instead lol.

We liked all of those cars before FNF because we old AF.

But you canā€™t discount the Hollywood effect. Hell Iā€™m prone to it as well - never even looked in the direction of an old muscle car, but after Gone in 60 Seconds, I like 70s Mustangs and got into older cars. They just seem cool to me now.

I'm 38 years old and grew up building jdm cars in high school friend's garages before fast and the furious came out. H22, B16, B18, etc motors. Once the movie came out everyone wanted to swap out engines into their hatchbacks and civics šŸ¤£ You can Google it, Toyota stopped selling the MKIV because it didn't sell well. Sports cars aren't as profitable as Suvs, sedans, etc. I knew people who didn't like the MKIV because they claimed it was overpriced and unproven long term which was simply hate. Fast and the furious didn't propel the MKIV into a new stratosphere but it did help as with any Hollywood movie. We can go down the list of cars or things that came out in movies that became iconic. Bumble bee Camaro? DeLorean? I'm sure I'm missing many more. I loved the MKIV growing up but life moved on and so did the used prices to a new planet. $120,000 for a used high mileage MKIV. Smh. The MKV will never be better than the MKIV and it wasn't supposed to be but it's a damn good fun car.
You were building engines at 15 before you had a driverā€™s license?

I guess I just haven't personally witnessed it. From what I've seen, the people that were kids during Fast and Furious are finally at places they can afford better cars. I just don't see many of them reliving 2001. I always assumed it was because prices rose as their income did. Always out of range.
For some of us, I just can't bring myself to pay that much. I love the cars, but to a point.
I've had to make peace with the face that I'll never own an RX7, a GTR, an NSX, or a Supra.
I'm okay with that because modern cars are f****** amazing.

Some of us were quite busy before we could drive. Thanks to my dad, in my case šŸ˜‚

I don't think it results should be surprising to anyone. They have the MKIV dead center in the thumbnail preview lol.

Based on which criteria?
I only mean legacy and what it means in our enthusiast culture. Fanboys will always freak out over the MKIV and the 2jz engine.

True story. All my friends had older brothers growing up and the older brothers were the ones who got us into street racing and the Jdm scene of the late 90's. We learned by helping them and them taking the time to teach us. Let's just say those were simpler times before social media and the internet. I remember vividly the summers spent swapping H22s into EG's and driving to find parts and dropping off engines at machine shops to get work done. Godzilla (R34) to us was the final boss in the late 90s.

I'm at peace with my childhood idols as well. I'll likely never own an RX7, NSX, etc. It was cool being around them growing up and seeing friends fix them up, but I'll likely never own one because of the stupid prices.

I agree. I think Toyota will take a similar route to others and shift to hybrid before all electric.
From. My understanding, that is their current plan after reading several articles about their long-term goals.

That MK2ā€¦ thatā€™s my pick. Creeping the internet for one nowā€¦ gah that whiteā€¦

Then MK5>MK4>MK3>>>>>>>>>MK1.
MK4 is great but itā€™s never been all that subjectively desirable to me and F&F makes it feel cliche.

Feels cliche, but I still respect the 2jz. If I had a choice of any 90's JDM cars though, I'd go NSX over MKIV. I remember being a kid seeing them around town saying to myself, "One day if I'm ever able to or rich, I want to own an NSX".

Didn't wanna hijack the thread but you live in Fresno so wanted to say yo!!

Back to the thread, I'm not old enough to fully appreciate these older cars, but I definitely say that watching F&F made me REALLY like "older" cars. I'd still prefer modern cars, because that's what I have, haha.
