What happens tho if you go with a non refundable dealership and they never get a car, they can’t keep your money after that?

This is literally what non-refundable means. You fork over money, it's theirs.

dealer #1 i told them i would take any color besides red and they said i would be in it by the end of the year, they said they would expect the car to be white.

dealer #2 i asked for black only and they said 90 days.

i dont like non refundable deposits either but the guy has been pretty up front, even offered me nitrogen in my tires for only $250
Tell them it comes standard with 70% nitrogen for free, maybe he should have listened during science class.

I get dealerships would use a non refundable method to make sure they have a serious buyer but if they can’t deliver a car by the end of production life, and keep your money. then that’s theft. Either way a credit card dispute should get your money back if that happens

If for literally any reason you do not get the car, that money is theirs. If you charge back you open yourself up to litigation.

I put a refundable deposit today with dealer #1, they said it could be 6-12 months before I receive a VIN with an actual date of arrival.

Are you talking used or new? I have been seeing people mention recently that used supra prices have been dropping quite a bit, but I haven't looked myself.

Are you looking for auto or manual?

Auto should be easier to source in general. I know it's a hassle but I would check the stock on Toyota's website consistently and call every dealer within a radius you are willing to travel to. Even better if you're willing to ship the car. I did that for 3 months and eventually found my car sitting in a showroom for MSRP

I've also been told by a dealership in Florida that deposits must be refundable and that a dealership cannot have you make a deposit that is non-refundable. Not sure what the exact laws are around this. also not sure if you would want to waste the extra money getting a lawyer if you end up really wanting that $1k deposit back and they refuse.
