Same issue with me. It's pretty rare but when it happens it's a touch embarassing.
What's the mileage on your car and how long have you noticed this happening?

I drove mine home from being PPF'd and there was a lot of white smoke.. but as it was a cold night I didn't think much of it. Also it was only about a 15km drive so I figured the engine probably didn't get a chance to warm up.

I popped the oil cap today (hadn't driven it since) and well, it didn't look great.

Hopefully it's just a build up of condensation from sitting around for weeks on a boat. ?
It's colloquially known as "mayo" and caused by condensing water mixing with the oil. I own 8 vehicles and try to avoid starting them and not letting the oil get to full operating temp for a decent period of time. It mainly occurs during cold starts and or cold weather operation especially with oil overcooled engines that do short trips in winter. Some engines don't use a thermostat on the oil cooler and suffer worse. If I need to start my race bikes for any reason and am not going to ride them and get the engine oil fully warmed I keep the running in the workshop to a minimum to avoid this issues as much as possible because you can't get the oil temp up high enough in the shop in any reasonable amount of running time. You can see the Mayo form on the sight glass of motorcycle engines. Even in my DD when I used to drop my wife at the local train station and return home a 2 klm trip I'd always drive the car around 10klm or so to get the oil temp up and minimise this issue. Most people dont have the time for that and some engines are worse than others for it. Water to oil heat exchanges fitted to a lot of cars that have oil cooling are less of a problem but it doesn't eliminate it entirely.

There shouldn't be any coolant and oil in the combustion chamber. Not to that extent. Maybe it's the turbo oil and coolant lines. I would check those.

Im going to try this hopefully it fixes the issue if not turbo might be doomed.
This is what coolant leaking into the combustion chamber looks like exhaust wise on cold start. Coolant leaks into the chamber during the cool down cycle and is burnt on start up. Anyway it shows the colour of the exhaust discharge and the concentration when it's chronic. You can also hear it misfiring for a while as well. The image is a borescope image of the same engine type Focus RS 2.3Litre turbo and you can see the beginning of the leakage at the bore bridge location. You can see the cylinder head and cylinder wall and the head gasket clamped between them both. Not chronic at this point but "on the way". Second image from my engine and nil leaks evident.

Did you ever figure this out? I am having the exact issue.. Lots of white smoke when car is hot while coming to a stop or idling shortly after or if i rev. Smells faintly of oil. Am catless, no catch can. new issue shortly after installing a new second Remnant turbo. I also can’t check oil because my car fails the measurement every time so I don’t know if it’s burning.

I’ve had this exact issue before and nearly tore my hair out chasing the issue. It turns out it was just too much oil in the car (the previous oil change was from a shop). The electronic oil gauge wouldn’t tell me if it was overfilled, just that it was full. I drained out a quart and a half and it brought it down to just above low. I’ve never had the issue since.

An OBD dongle will give you the exact measurement of your oil, and help you understand your situation a little better.

This is ECUTek but I know the parameter is available on BM3 and a few other platforms.

At the least, this should help you understand your oil level before going to a dealership.

I had this same problem, but it was a stock turbo that bit dust, not an oil overfill condition.

Bimmerlink will show this as well and for reference:

- 100% (6.6 liters) = 97mm
- 100% (iDrive max) = 97-85mm
- 75% = 84mm
- 50% = 82mm
- 25% = 81mm
- 0% (iDrive min) = 78mm

How do you get to that screen on the ecutek app? Mine does not look like that, and I can't measure my oil within the car. It always stops at ~18%.

What happened to the first turbo?
First turbo self-deleted the wastegate flap and I had no boost til 5000rpm. Now more issues, unsure if turbo related but it is the most likely.

Update for my issue with this symptom, oil drain line from my Remnant turbo is kinked and not allowing proper drainage. Will have to clock turbo to make everything fit nicely, start car to see if it's still smoking or not. If so I will have to swap CHRA, if not I will have to take turbo out and just change drain line since it's ruined. At least the motor is fine.

Any updates on this? I'm having the same problem. Just did catless downpipe and BM3 OTS 93 tune. After about 3 weeks I started to see smoke. Very intermittent. Only seems to happen when cruising in normal mode and when I come to a stop. Will do it once or twice and then seems to go away but I can still smell something is off from the exhaust.

Having the same issue down to the same tune. Any update on this?
