Supra 3.0 vs G87 M2 vs 718 Cayman S

Long time forum member here, but never posted much. I want to go ahead and apologize for the long post coming up.

I’m looking for some advice on my dilemma here.

I owned a 2021 Supra 3.0 Premium for 3 years and sold it back early this year when I bought a new G87 M2. Before the Supra, I owned a base model 7MT Corvette stingray.

The Supra was better than the corvette in every single way except for the fact that I’m a manual transmission snob. However, I fell in love with the ZF8 in the Supra. So much so that I actually chose to buy the G87 with the ZF8 instead of the rather underwhelming 6MT in the BMW.

After about 7 months and ~3,500 miles of G87 ownership, I find myself missing the Supra at times. The G87 is faster, more comfortable, more luxurious, and just a better GT car all around.

I thought that the extra luxuries of the G87 would make it feel like a huge step up from the Supra. However, the Supra was just more fun and had more character. The ~400 pounds difference in weight makes a HUGE difference to the experience; both good and bad. The ZF8 also felt a lot better in the Supra. Like it was tuned better for the B58 in the Supra than the S58 in the M2.

I find myself missing a manual transmission every time I drive the M2. Something that never happened while owning the Supra. Recently, my financial situation has changed quite a bit and I find myself in a position to comfortably afford a 718 Cayman S.

If I buy one, it would have to be a manual. I’ve never driven a manual Supra, but I’d also consider one. I’ve learned that the cool screens and tech stuff get old really fast for me. I prefer a more connected experience over most other things. In fact, the 6MT ND Miata I owned was more fun to drive than both the Supra and G87.

I’m thinking hard about selling the G87 and buying a 718 Cayman S or manual Supra. Right now I’m leaning more towards the cayman about 70% as opposed to the manual Supra. Mostly because I’ve already owned a Supra and would like to try something else.

I’d love some input from someone who’s owned at least two of these cars. I’m in no rush to sell, and am very happy with my G87 in the meantime until I find what I’m looking for.

I’ll add that I have considered 6MT Lotus Emira, but I don’t want to deal with the problems and lack of dealer network. I live 3 hours from the closest lotus dealership.

Yep, agree with this. I have a 2023 manual Supra, but I cannot afford a new 718 with my family. Happy with the purchase I made because it was within my budget, but really like the Porsche. Have contemplated trading in for a 4 door m3, but prices are really high for one with a manual transmission. Good luck with your decision

Moving down to a 2.5 boxer pancake 4 cylinder is not the right move
If you have to buy an over priced beetle.....get the GTS or GT4
At least those have the high rev 6 cylinders
I have driven the 718 S with some mods and though at times the rotation were very much telepathic , it never felt like it was 35k more car than the A90

And I agree with that. Sold my GT4 to buy a supra and GR86, been more than a year, no regrets. The Supra is mighty impressive in all aspects.

To be fair though, the Porsche experience is something I wish everybody to experience. I've had that hitch scratched and have no regrets, but if I would have never experienced it, I would still have the hitch and wonder what would it be like...

Even in its base model, the Porsche Cayman is predictably excellent in all of the ways we've come to expect. This is a driver-centric vehicle with an emphasis on sharp handling and premium cabin materials. But excessive outside noise, a lackluster engine note and questionable value diminish the Cayman's overall appeal.

Nice response. One day I...oh fk me, nvm they cost more than my life is worth now, cool. Finally make it life, then inflation, and throw on some greed and that gt4 is now 2x the MSRP and it has 12 miles on it. Cool, cool, cool, cool, coolsies.

Maybe back to consider the turbo s? Orrrr the supra is pretty damn pleasing. Idk, should I still worry about scratching that Porsche itch?

Personally, I'd just go with a manual G87 and forget the rest. The Porsche is nice, but I'd rather have a GT car, which fits the G87 and the Supra better.

Porsches are nice and all...and everyone makes their purchases based on different factors...but a huge factor for me, are looks. For me, the Supra is just such a unique looking car. People who know nothing about cars think it's some kind of exotic. I get approached all the time just while pumping gas.

It may sound vain and unimportant to some, but I love the uniqueness. I used to own a '93 RX7, and it was a similar experience when it came to gawkers.

With their performance being so similar, I don't see myself getting rid of my Supra for a Cayman (especially not a 4 cylinder).

It's all personal preference in the end though. This was just my two cents.

Congrats! How would you compare the Supra vs Cayman on your test drive?

The Cayman definitely handled a little bit better than the Supra, which is to be expected considering the weight difference and engine layout.

Speed-wise, the Supra felt a lot peppier because of the larger displacement, more torque, and less turbo lag.

While it’s obviously not as comfortable or luxurious as my G87 was, the Supra is definitely more comfortable than the Cayman. Less road noise and more forgiving suspension in comfort mode.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually much prefer the shifter feel of the Supra over the Cayman. Much more direct, notchy, and not nearly as much play in the shifter when in gear. When I first got in the Cayman, I wiggled the shifter to make sure it was in neutral before starting it, but the car was actually in 1st gear! There was so much play in it that I actually thought it was in neutral for a split second.

All in all, they are both great cars. But at the end of the day, if I wanted a new Cayman S equipped similarly to a 3.0 premium, it was going to cost me about $40,000 more. I just couldn’t justify that price difference. Is the cayman better than the Supra in some ways? Yes. Is the Supra better than the cayman in some ways? Also yes. Is the Cayman worth the extra money? To some. To me? No.

This. My wife knows nothing about cars, but HATES the way the Cayman looks. However, she absolutely loves how the Supra looks. I think they are both good looking in their own ways, but I would agree that the Supra is much more unique-looking.
