Toyota just reported the first drop in quarterly profit in 2 years, first drop in output in 4 years, and announced that it will pause EV investment until absolutely necessary.

Yeah, not a chance they bring these cars to market anytime soon. But keep dreaming guys ?

Time will tell, it's all speculation.

Personally, i'm quite confident. Toyota has been doing things that make no financial sens in the past few years and their motivation lies somewhere else...

Do you think the Mk6 will be 6 cylinder + manual still? With or without hybridization?
If an MK6 comes to fruition, i believe it will have an option for a 6/6 combo. I think the 4cyl Hybrid will be the same 400hp one going in the Mr2, so it would be the "entry level" supra engine option. I think they will take the GR 3cyl, double it to 6, make 600hp and thats your top dog.

Weight and body rigidity on the new platform is priority number one. We will see the lightest and strongest Supra chassis ever made.

Damn you got me looking up a ton of ? fo fun! My take, I’ve got to give Toyota a lot of credit for maintaining their long term game and not following the average quarterly profit chasing herd ?. Like many did going all in on EVs. Akio Toyota still has plenty of influence on the board. In fact, they’ve been quite busy recently.

And this isn’t just in F1. Toyota recently won the 2024 WEC championship - the biggest beatdown endurance series. They also haven’t slowed down on the other multiple other racing series they’re in.

All this marketing & extreme testing (what racing really is) will ultimately benefit everyday car buyers imo.

As far as the MR2…. sounds like it’ll be one hellofa car!

I’ve said it before: Toyota, a multi-billion-dollar company, doesn’t hire people just for “tax breaks” or build cars to fit “agendas.” They hire some of the smartest minds in the world to create vehicles that make sense—efficient, reliable, and aligned with what drivers actually need and want. When they began developing the TNGA platform, they knew they were designing something flexible and forward-thinking, capable of supporting nearly any type of car. They truly “future-proofed” their approach. Smart, very, very smart.

"We will make the (next) Celica!" Toyota Vice President Nakajima declares at the Rally Japan venue! Development has begun, and the next 86 will also be "released"

PXL_20241123_043206514-600x338.webp

On November 23, 2024, during a stage event at Toyota Stadium during the Rally Japan, Chairman Akio Toyoda (Morizo) of Best Car asked, "Are you making the Celica?" "I can't answer that, but there's an executive there, so I'll ask him," he said, pointing to Toyota Motor Corporation Executive Vice President (Product) Yuki Nakajima, who was standing next to the stage. Vice President Nakajima, who took the stage, answered, "We're making the Celica."

â–  "Is it okay to say this in a place like this?"
Rally Japan 2024 is being held in Aichi and Gifu prefectures from November 21-24, 2024. At a stage event held at Toyota Stadium, the base of the event, Best Car's editorial director Jin Hongo held an open question session with Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda (Morizo). When he asked, "Is the Celica going to be released?", he invited Vice President Nakajima onto the stage, saying, "There are executives here today, so let's ask them," as mentioned at the beginning.

Vice President Nakajima announced the start of development, saying, "To be honest, there is no sign of it right now. However, there are many people within the company who are eagerly awaiting the Celica. So...I'm not sure if it's okay to say this in a public forum, but we're doing the Celica!"

In response to this surprising statement, Chairman Toyoda followed up by saying, "Is everything okay? There are a lot of difficulties. Best Car wrote that Toyota is making the Celica, but you shouldn't believe that." Vice President Nakajima responded by saying, "They haven't said when it will be released, so it could be next year."

I took this to mean that they are "publicly announcing the development of the next-generation Celica." I look forward to working with them! (I got their word!)

â– The next question was, "What will happen to the next GR86?"
At the event, questions were also accepted from the audience, and one very promising question was asked: "What will the next-generation GR86's engine be like? Will it be turbocharged? Will it be FR? Have they even started developing it yet?" The microphone was passed to driver (and team manager) Kazuya Oshima, who is currently competing in the Super Taikyu Series with the GR86 for "ORC ROOKIE Racing," who replied, "We're currently working on a lot of things (regarding the next-generation GR86 and its engine), mainly on the circuit."

In response, Chairman Toyoda said, "I don't really understand. This is a question from Best Car. I think I should ask an executive officer," and passed the microphone back to Executive Vice President Nakajima on stage. And then...

"At this year's (2024) Tokyo Auto Salon, I asked Morizo (Chairman Toyoda Akio), 'Which is your favorite engine, the one you would like to leave to the next generation?' He replied, 'Subaru's horizontally opposed engine and Mazda's rotary engine.' There were no Toyota engines!! This inspired all of Toyota's engine developers. We will create an engine that Morizo will want to leave behind. It's not a matter of whether we can release it or not, or whether we will leave it behind or not, but we are going to release it!'

Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru will hold a joint workshop in May 2024. There, Subaru will declare that it will continue to develop the horizontally opposed engine, and Mazda will continue to develop the rotary engine (effectively). Toyota will exhibit a completely new 1.5L and 2.0L engine. In particular, the 2.0L engine is said to be capable of producing over 400 horsepower if equipped with a turbo.

Toyota Motor Corporation Executive Vice President Nakajima explains the new engine at the Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru joint workshop. This will be in the next 86!

Regardless of whether this engine will be installed, or whether it will be FR or 4WD, Toyota is continuing to develop sports engines, and it can be said that this has now been announced as a declaration that it will be installed in the next GR86. Looking forward to it!!

I'm wondering how Toyota will make the Supra lighter than 3,3xx pounds while not increasing the cost 25k+ - it will be interesting to see.

Toyota Motor Corporation Executive Vice President Nakajima explains the new engine at the Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru joint workshop. This will be in the next 86!
This poorly translation makes me think the next 86 and BRZ could be Miata based.
