What I would like to know is if re-locking the DME converts back to the OEM CID and CVN, or is that permanently changed due to the permanent Bench Unlock.

Asking because California smog. Boo. I am hoping this acts like the Pre June 2020 DMEs where you can unlock, lock back to OEM specs and unlock after. That would be ideal.

Edit: Femto confirmed, new bench unlock will operate like Pre June 2020 DME, you can relock for OEM CVN and CID for smog and bench unlock after.

This is good news - what about potential warranty issues with the dealership?

Relocking the ECU will indeed convert back to OEM CID/CVN, not permanently changed and leading to any issues with Paperwork etc. As @razorlab mentioned though Flash counter may not be reset to 0 depending on your method of flashing back to stock. Each tuning suite may have their own implementation for this portion. And Flash counter may not be frozen at 0 or 1 like previous generation BMW relocks/tune removal. So far these new solutions seem promising - CID/CVN will be back to factory but not sure right not ATM about flash counter. Previous gen BMW ECU had ability to reset these to 0/1 without issues so as not to be detectable etc. Time will tell.
