This is the only article referencing the double decklid approach that I could find in a quick one page search. I read at least two other articles around that timeframe going into the same sometime in the last two years.
Anyway this one is from almost two years ago. Since then they'd have come much further along in the overall MR2 project.

The last two other subsequent big developments we have heard about since then were the "change" to the G20E 2.0L turbo four cylinder engine (I think it's obvious at this point that they just didn't say much about the four cylinder at first and always planned to use it since it was designed around the same time as the G16E 3-cyl)... and the issues they were having dialing in the suspension and handling while using the GR Yaris mid-engine prototype as a test and R&D mule (which they apparently solved already).
