If the Celica/ MR2 is still 4 years out when will the next gen Supra arrive 2035?

The Celica should come quicker. Toyota already has already shown a prototype at a dealer meeting ealier this year. I'm hoping we seeing some camo test cars pretty soon. :D

The Celica should come quicker since it will be a front engine transverse engine design (one assumes with the GR-Four AWD system from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla). The Corolla and Yaris lines are both shifting significantly for their next generations and I wouldn't be surprised if the subframes of one or both get re-used with changes.

Same for the Supra MKVI since its platform is also going to be shared with the next Lexus coupe (in 2+2 layout for the Lexus). The LC500 is probably not going to stick around much longer.

I think the development for those cars may have gotten started sooner than the MR2's development did. Either that... or in combination with that... Toyota clearly wants to solve the issue of handling control at the absolute limit that the SW20 generation had (depending on the driver) which is why it is taking much longer to develop for production than we expect it normally should.

The next GR86... other than that they're doing it's hard to say exactly when since the current model and BRZ just got a 2027 model year.

...

What raised my eyebrow with the next gen MR2 is that two of these three articles emphasize it will use the 8-speed "Direct Shift" automatic AWD box found in the A/T GR Yaris, Corolla (and JDM LBX?). But carrying over the 6-speed manual AWD gearbox isn't mentioned. I hope that doesn't mean they will not offer it since this model is supposed to debut as a non-hybrid.

I've seen videos from Japan where they are saying the GR Celica will be a mid-engine BEHIND the driver.

Yeah. I feel like there is uncertainty over whether they can successfully bring back both models or not and whether it make more sense to have an awd MR2 or a mid engined Celica if they can only do one.

They definitely have to go with MR2 or Celica and can't really have both if both are going to be mid-engined. Doesn't really make sense unless it's gonna be 86 vs Supra where one is low power light weight and the other is higher power and more premium.

I could see the MR2 being made in the $60K+ segment to be the new Cayman competitor, with the MK6 Supra bumping to $80k+ to go after the non-turbo 911's. That could be a smart play.

I've heard those rumors too but it's still not very clear to me whether the mid-engine project will be called "Celica" or if they'll go with "MR2". Toyota did recently revive the Celica, MR2 and MR-S trademarks recently.

So far the only thing concrete as to an "MR2" style rear-mid-engine AWD car are the test development mules. And now it sounds like they project a 2030 model year introduction for that. A long way off. It will be very odd if they don't use the MR2 name and call it a Celica by then but we all heard/read that rumor of Celica and MR2 being combined. I think it has more to do with drivetrain development since both will use a G20E, a version of GR-Four AWD and presumably the GR Corolla's/Yaris's 8-speed auto and 6-speed manual.

The last I heard on price range was that the intended "MR2"-like mid engine AWD car will easily be an $80k+ USD MSRP vehicle. That would price it higher than the current Supra and right on par with what the A80 Turbo used to cost when adjusted for today's inflation.

But Toyota has talked about intentions for the Celica as a more "luxurious personal coupe" in the Toyota/GR lineup. Presumably more luxurious than the GR86. Not sure how that will go now with the new CEO at the helm unless a "Celica" project is also one of Akio Toyoda's pet projects.

The 3rd gen GR86 and an 8th gen "Celica" would serve different purposes and offer different experiences.

It does beg the question of how the next GR lineup other than the GT3 will work:

GR86 (Miata co-development? Aging IS RWD platform based? Some very new RWD small or slightly larger platform based?)
Celica (Assuming it would be front engine based?? Because if not it wouldn't be in this end of the lineup)
Supra
MR2 (??)

The GR Corolla will probably go away after this generation since the core platform will fundamentally change and the GR Yaris in its current form will also likely go away once the next generation Yaris platform is introduced. That does leave a gap for a front engine G20E AWD model in the lineup below the projected to be very expensive next "MR2".

And Lexus is supposed to share the Supra MKVI platform for their new coupe once the LC500 goes away so that amortizes costs for both vehicles and gives Lexus a coupe platform that has pedigree.

I'm 77yo now (and just did a track day at Road Atlanta). In 2030 I'll be 81 and I hope I'll still have the skills to take a Celica or and MR2 out for an occasional track day!
