Yes likely any engine problems would be denied a warranty claim. Thatā€™s why I got a piggyback

It's an external unit that intercepts the ECU and provides it's own map. Basically increases turbo boost to create more power

Wats a piggyback bro ????? New to this stuff
Think of the piggyback as connecting to the existing system and tricking the car into more boost, etc...

The other alternative is a ā€œflashā€ tune. With those the factory programming is overwriten by the new tuned file.

I have heard that both can be detected. However, it seems to be the consensus that piggybacks are harder to detect and discovered by the dealership less often.

Iā€™ll likely be going the piggyback route in hopes that itā€™s not as easily detectable should something happen. Wouldnā€™t think itā€™d be as itā€™s not writing over the factory data on the ECU/DME. While Iā€™m sure you can flash it back to stock, Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a way for them to see key/engine cycle counts, etc., the same way they could on the STi I just came from. Same reason Iā€™ve left my Raptor alone.

both flash and piggybacks are detectable if a dealer actually wanted to look. These ECUs log acceleration moments, speeds and etc. And can set flags in the background.

If people are truly worried about warranty, just leave the car stock.

This is correct, I work for BMW and if there is a large warranty request like engine replacement then they (corporate) are involved. When they pull logs it will show increased boost, etc and can deny claim. Only way out is leaving it stock. Just want people to make sure you guys have correct information. This applies for Toyota as well. There is no undetectable tune regardless of how it's applied.

I wonder why there hasnā€™t been a tuner yet thatā€™s been able to offer a completely undectable tune, especially since we can back up the DME. Something that could take parameters that were logged before the tune was installed under stock conditions and extrapolate them across the life of the motor while restoring anything else to factory settings

There is more logic on the DME / ECU than what a flash has access to. The hardware needs a base layer that starts it up similar to the BIOS on your computer, this layer has some basic logging abilities that you cannot override by design. There are also other data logs that would be cumbersome to spoof even if you could get around the base level logging.

The other side of this is that no tuner wants to be on the hook for enabling hundreds of people to commit felony fraud. That is a sure fire way to end up staring down the barrel of a ton of corporate attorneys for Toyota, BMW, etc.

The benefit with the piggy backs are you can take them off before the car goes to the dealer and they are none the wiser.
However, a custom remap tunes to your car will usually give better results but is more costly, not as easy to find.
