Ah man, you hit me right in the feels with this post. As a proud previous owner of an E28 M5 with an S38, I can confirm the M88/S38 engines are by far some of the best sounding mass production engines BMW has ever built.
Oh gosh...dont kill me but i HATE how this sounds, that metallic raspiness...omg. Ye its characteristic but a no no for me. I was about to buy m3 e46 and 3/4 my google searches were: "how to remove exhaust rasp"
Especially in CSL trim. Too bad that never came to the states. But the E46 M3 is hit or miss for most, some can’t stand the rasp and some love it. I loved mine with the eisenmann exhaust, sounded more deeper. I also owned an e60 M5 with full exhaust and that thing sounded like an American muscle car! Loved it. lol, I really miss bmw building cars like those in the past, sadly, we will never see that again.
That being said the 4.0 flat six Porsche engine sounds insane! Imo, one of the best sounding engines ever.
Omg thought am the only one lol. Idk man, other than M88, S70/2, S85, S65 and B58 and S52 it is just a no-no.
I love the metallic rasp.
One of my biggest challenges in getting an A90 is meaning I have to sell my C63... the 6.2 makes me giggle every single cold start <3 (especially de-catted)
The only thing that killed the CSL for me was the SMG gearbox. If they offered a manual like the regular E46 M3, man it would've one of the all time greatest drivers cars ever. Also I have never heard anyone describe a E60 M5 sounding like an american muscle car lol. That's a first. A friend of mine used to have one with Evolve headers and RPI GT exhaust and it definitely didn't sound like a muscle car. More like a screaming F1 car for the road banshee. It made Ferrari owners turn their heads that's for sure and Mustang/Camaro/Challenger guys sh!t their pants when it hit it's 8250rpm redline and all 10 cylinders showing them the taillights lol.
And yeah the 4.0 Porsche engine sounds amazing. I am actually going to go all out on my GT4 with a 4.0l kit and X51 power kit when the warranty expires. But future Supra ownership might delay that lol.
We 2 vs world
I muuuch prefer how this B58 sounds...
Lol, yes, you are correct on that matter. I should have been more specific as in start up and idle, the car was sooo loud. But revving it and flooring it it sounded like a banshee out of hell!!
How can this beautiful brute of a turbo6 engine get 24/31 mpg, yet the 86 only manages 23/30 mpg?!?! And it only has 200hp??!?!
Engine efficiency and gearing (as said).
Torque first, the gearing to take advantage of it second.
