I've read that the LC500 has to constantly hunt for gears with its 10 speed Aisin automatic which is a big no-no. The 10 speed automatic being used on the Camaro ZL1 apparently doesn't have this issue based on very good programming. The ZL1 torque converter transmission hides its torque-converter based identity very well by not bringing out the typically flaws of a non-DCT auto transmission.

If the BMW-Toyota partnership also produces a torque-converter transmission with the same performance output/characteristics found on the Camaro ZL1 slush-box, it would end up performing the same as a DCT and have the reliability of a torque-converter auto, the best of both worlds.
.."hunting" for gears is all programming, and it is only evident with the LC if you aren't in the sport modes...but in reality, I could care less about the programming in auto mode..if I have to drive a sports car without a stick I'm going to at least control the gears in the most manual fashion and from what I've seen with the LC test drives, it definitely blips through gears quite quickly in manual mode.

while the Corvette doesn't use the 10 speed, I think Matt's concerns with the shifting speeds are valid for this thread...adequate when you are wot and nearing the redline but lame as hell at lower revs..nty

Inside the cabin, there’s a sheet taped on the dash that shows some key info, including the Z4 successor’s model code, G29, and the engine found in this prototype, which is the new B48 2.0-liter turbo-four used in everything from the Mini Cooper S Hardtop to the BMW 530i. This particular model features a version, dubbed the “S20i,” rated at around 194 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

For the U.S., however, it’s likely that we’ll receive the 30i variant, which is the same engine rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft in the 230i, 330i, and 530i. In addition to the four-cylinder variant, the Z4 successor should also include a six-cylinder-powered M40i model that may utilize the same 335-hp 3.0-liter turbo I-6 found in the M240i and 540i. Although the prototype we spied featured a six-speed manual transmission, expect the U.S.-spec model to come exclusively with the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. If a row-your-own option does become available in the upcoming Z4 successor, it’ll likely be limited to the base four-cylinder variant.

I still maintain that if there's no manual I'm not buying. If I have to get a base 4-cyl to get a manual I don't necessarily have a problem with that as long as it drives nicely.

I don't see a good reason to own this car with an auto. I'd go with a Lexus RC if that's what I wanted, but more realistically would probably just keep waiting for the next GT86.

Is there going to be a next 86?

2017 Toyota Supra to get automatic gearbox and BMW electronics

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2017-toyota-supra-spy-pics-specs-and-launch-date

Latest shots show Supra's look both inside and out; it'll share its underpinnings and gearbox with the upcoming BMW Z4

The hotly anticipated Toyota Supra will have an automatic gearbox and BMW electronics, as shown by a new sighting of a development car's interior.

Photographed testing at the NĂĽrburgring, the two-seater model, which is twinned with the next BMW Z4, features BMW switchgear, including a dash-top infotainment system and accompanying rotary dial controller on the central tunnel, as well as BMW heating control buttons and a BMW automatic gearlever.

The Supra is expected to share its automatic gearbox with the BMW, albeit with different ratios, while also incorporating the same hybrid four-wheel drive set-up, comprised of a BMW petrol engine mated to electric motors with energy stored in supercapacitors - which will have technical links to the ones used in Toyota’s TS030 Hybrid Le Mans car.

Toyota has refrained from revealing any details about its new coupé, telling Autocar: "We don't comment on future products". However,ut sources claim that the car's use of a hybrid set-up means it will likely be offered exclusively with an automatic gearbox.

Design influence for the model comes from the FT-1 concept of the 2014 Detroit motor show. The Supra will be built on the same platform as the upcoming Z4, which will use BMW’s carbonfibre architecture from its current i3, i8 and 7 Series. However, unlike the convertible Z4, the Supra will only be available as a coupé.

Predicted to arrive in 2018, shortly after its Z4 counterpart, the new Supra is the long-awaited successor to Toyota’s discontinued coupé, production of which ended in 2002.

The new Supra will sit above the GT86 in Toyota’s line-up, making it the Japanese brand’s flagship sports car. It will also be considerably more expensive than the GT86, which is priced from £26,855, due to the Supra's advanced powertrain and construction.

Toyota first demonstrated the performance potential of a hybrid model back in 2013 with the Yaris Hybrid-R concept car, which used a 414bhp set-up comprising a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor on each rear wheel.

I can't say yet, I just hope it isn't gutless.
I've never had a DCT before, so I'd be interested in that even with all the internet hate.
Manual transmissions stop being fun and can fuck themselves once you hit heavily congested stop and go traffic.
