I’ve been using a BMW LL-01 approved oil - Motul 8100 X-cess (5w30) to be specific. 5w40 would work as well. edyvw is my fav contributor (site below). He does this for a living. Dude is open minded, considers different conditions, fuels, etc. I’m running standard 93 octane.

Wealth of info on there. It’s a lot of reading but oddly fun ? I would put any of those in my car.
Thanks Mark!
I opted for the Liqui Moly kit. Compared to Amazon, the price from this site is great since it comes with the filter, drain plug and all new gaskets.

Not a Corvette.
I know the forum is a great resource, but googling this usually brought up better results. In OTHER B58 manuals it says burning a 1/2-1qt is aight every 1000-1200 miles, especially if you're driving it hard at all.
A quart every 1000 miles is not normal in any modern car. Period. You would drive from NY to CA and half your oil would be gone. Nope. I’ve owned probably twenty cars and none of them consumed oil like that in normal healthy operation.

I drove my VW from CA to NJ and it didn’t consume any oil.

Talk to BMW, not me.

1 quart every 1k miles is ridiculous. That's how much oil is burned by a clapped-out, uninsured, 190k mile Altima with missing bumpers and a garbage bag over a window. All while leaving a huge cloud of smoke and dropping credit scores in its hazardous wake..

As I mentioned the manufacturers oil consumption criteria aren't arrived at for the long term benefit of the customer or the engine but as a smoke screen if you pardon the pun to divert you the owner from a warranty claim. It's a common thing, all manufacturers do it.
I was talking to a close friend that worked for a global manufacturer in their engine testing and development division a few years ago and was asking him what work he was currently doing. At the time he had random engines out of a batch of something like 2,000 and was testing them in the cell for performance, emissions and oil consumption. Why? Well they found out that batch of engines were all made with out of round bores and he was running tests on random engines out of the bunch to see if they could still be used in production or they needed to be scrapped.
Sales people wonder why I'm not overjoyed like a school kid when I take delivery of a new car. Sometimes knowing what goes on behind the scenes isn't that great in reality. Good to know when you have an issue though as they can't bullshit you into submission.

I'm nearly down to the minimum level in MMI now, after 1650 miles since service. Discussed with dealer, and theyve agreed to setup oil consumption test. If the test results in them agreeing to fix the car (per toyota TSB, ordering new parts, essentially engine overhaul) then I will keep the car, otherwise its being sold sadly.

That being said, anyone looking for a Gold certified unmodified low mileage Supra!? /s

So u didnt read the manual for break in period
Made great toilet paper.

Hard break-in is mandatory for this engine. Most, if not all of us who did one, have no issues. The majority of issues are with the people who drive it like a grandma.

I read it and disregarded it. And zero issues
Exactly.

Same. Why I was thinking about that thin CAFE standard 0w-20 oil. I didn’t have that stuff in my car long after purchase.
Exactly right. I broke it in hard, drained the pisswater, and she's been happy on 5W-30 ever since.

FWIW, I followed the break-in procedure and use 0W-20 and also have no issues with burning oil. I did, and do drive the car as intended after the break-in period and the 0W-20 seems to hold up to street driving just fine, Blackstone reports look good.

If you live inside an active Volcano like Arizona or something then yeah I could see the argument for switching to 5W-30 though.

But I think it just comes down to YMMV on the break-in procedure, some people follow it and have no issues, some do. Some people do a hard break-in and have no issues, some also do, and this will likely be debated until the end of time XD

The 0w-20 is to raise the MPG rating for the EPA, not because it's what's best for the car. You'll notice a quieter and better idle when you switch, and of course increased protection. I use Liquimoly myself for the last 11k miles and it's been excellent.

So I’ve had two ’21 models including my current car. The first one burned oil and required occasional top ups. Frankly it didn’t seem out of the ordinary by BMW standards. Swapping between factory oil and a thicker oil didn’t seem to make any difference. My current one hasn’t given me any low oil messages at all. Sure doesn’t help that measuring the oil in these things requires the planets to align. I did go from weathertech floormats to 3d maxpider and gloss black wind deflectors to carbon fiber, so that could be it lol.

Whatever you say, I certainly trust what you say over the manufacturers of the car. You can't seriously say that the people that followed it are the ones that have issues lol... I don't think the break-in had anything to do with this issue. 2021 MY are known to have oil issues
