Dunno anything about battery management on iPhone.
Is Location for G-Maps set for Always? maybe helps.. Mine is on... I've yet to root cause to conclude that it's overnight stays.. Not sure why that'd be related.. Maps don't wake up? Did you ever try launching Maps on the phone first to see if that resolves the blank screen issue ?

Come to think of it, I experienced other issues on Waze. But that's not CarPlay issue. Waze on iPhone issue in general. I'd open Waze, it could never pinpoint my location. That may have been resolved.

Yep, my maps is set to always allow and background refresh is on as well. It's something to do with iOS suspending processes for background apps while in CarPlay to help extend battery life, and for some reason it seems Google Maps is getting caught up in that.

Apple maps runs at the service level and is deemed "critical" by iOS, where Google Maps does not, which is why this issue generally only shows up with other Map Apps.

At the end of the day it's an annoyance but I'll survive. Hopefully it's solved with either iOS 17 or another revision of iOS 16

I experience this with 16.6 as well even on my iDrive 7 on X6.
What I usually do is, open maps on my iphone and close it, swipe it (kill it, another annoying thing about iOS. don't know if it's really closed).. It closes Maps on iDrive as well. Next time, I set my destination on the phone and re-open Maps on iDrive.
Seems to work. not a 100% though. Can't recall if this was on earlier iOS builds..

You might not want to hear this but I am on iOS 16.6 and I am experiencing none of what you are experiencing with CarPlay. I use Waze exclusively (for navigation) and have never had it be unable to pinpoint my location.. it sometimes gets confused at the start of a drive due to direction of travel but it rights itself in seconds which I consider normal.

Might be worth consdiering a factory reset and a fresh iOS install for 17?

Meh, Android Auto is way better

Do share how you did this in the Supra. I'm an Android guy for life but am not happy with Toyota not giving Android any respect.

Just look up MMI Prime from Bimmertech. It's a bit pricey and takes some effort to install but it's totally worth it.

Different strokes, everyone will have their own opinion on it. I had AA in my previous BRZ, and in my GF's STI and it's worked flawlessly for us, and I just find it runs a bit smoother/more fluidly for me.

Most of my issues with Apple aren't with the iPhone itself, hardware wise it's fine, the battery life, display and Camera are all great, and iOS is fine as an OS, I don't find it unintuitive, or difficult to use. My issues mainly lie with Apple's business practices and them forcing you in to their ecosystem, even though their Apps, at least to me aren't as good as the competition.

Waze and Google Maps are better than Apple Maps, WhatsApp is better than the standard messaging App, they won't adopt RCS messaging so that they can keep iMessage proprietary and act like it's an exclusive feature, they stuck with the lightning cable which was in every way inferior to USB-C for no reason other than they got to charge a premium for their cables, and only changed for the upcoming iPhone 15 because they were forced to by law, and if you want to have proper backups, they force you to pay for iCloud storage, which is just Google storage that's being resold at a premium through Apple.

If I'm paying $1300 for the phone, I should get to pick what apps I want to use as my defaults for certain things without having to fight the device to do so, and it's the primary reason I prefer Android, they just let you do it

My girls son works for apple so she obviously uses iPhone. Every time she uses apple navigation, she gets lost.
