I've been searching all over the internet. I'd love to have more turbo sounds, but not at the cost of potentially losing power/deal with heat soak

Has anyone found a nice medium?

I've read up about getting the bms muffler delete, adding a drop in filter, and replacing the stock inlet with an aftermarket one such as FTP or Dinan.

Anyone done this and did it make any difference?

I have a resonator delete, drop in K&N filter, Paradigm intake hose, and CTS turbo inlet. I also took out the padding in the intake box.

Compared to stock setup it didn’t increase turbo noises a little, but nothing crazy. Throttle is a bit more responsive as well.

dinan intake. dinan inlet. verus turbo heat shield. very happy medium, even in Miami climate

I have BMC filter, resonator delete, and FTP intake pipe. Didn’t do squat for sound. Probably didn’t do squat for anything, really.

So, I'll throw in my two cents if I may with a thought and an anecdote.

The engineers who design these cars have to consider a lot of things, chief among them being performance, fuel efficiency, noise and reliability. You change one thing, you'll likely change another. Everything is a trade-off. You can tune the crap out of these engines but the odds that they will last as long as an unmodified stock engine are slim.

So, many years ago I was at the track (which is where all good stories start) and I was chatting with an engineer who worked at Ford SVT. He had worked on the F150 Lightning, IIRC. I asked him what he thought about the K&N filters, which were big stuff back then (I guess they still are). He replied:

"Car manufacturers spend millions of dollars to get every last bit of performance out of an engine. If the simple addition of an air filter would make a difference, don't you think they'd use them?"

I feel the same way about these aftermarket "CAI" systems, which (as folks in this thread have noted) often do more to reduce performance than increase it.

I'd say on the flip side, car manufacturers also try to save money on production to increase profit margins. If he were an engineer who worked on the engine, that might have been his focus, but I'm sure the bean counters and higher ups also put some restrictions on their budget.

No they don’t “try and get every last bit of performance”.

They shoot for the middle of the bell curve with low cost production vs ave reliability with performance level the consumers will accept.

Must have been an engineer in charge of tail lights

I'm a bean counter and I can confirm that beans are always the top priority.

The corporations exist to accumulate the maximum number of beans for their owners. Everything else is incidental to the prime objective.

I love my Supra, BMW and Porsches. But when you start taking out OEM parts and replacing them with aftermarket performance parts, you don’t have to be an engineer to see & feel the difference. And back to the SVT guy, I have no doubts they were trying to do their very best -with the amount of money the were allocate with.
