I’m going to look at a few used 2020 Supra 3.0’s this weekend and wanted to know if there were any specific small issues to check for. Also, are there alternatives to paying $40 for a CarFax when buying private party?

Spend $99 on an electronic paint gauge… they don’t lie if paintwork or an accident has taken place prior. Even happens to new cars. I passed on the first one. Even more important on a used example.

1. Make sure ALL recalls are done.
2. Know if/what tune is done. Don’t take seller’s (private/dealer rep) word as mine lied!
3. $40 Carfax is worth it
4. Take it to a knowledgeable Toyoda dealer and have it checked out. Maybe a small investment but best to protect yourself.

The short of it for me… I bought from a dealer who stated there was no tune. Found out three months later it had BM3 after dealer did the brake recall. Not sure but I can assume my VIN is flagged which will create an issue if I have a drivetrain warranty claim.

Another area to inspect to determine if the car care for … check the lower front air dam for excessive scrapes, rocker panels undersides, under belly engine aluminum shield panel for damage and for wheel lips for curb rash.

Service records are always a plus!

The paint gauge is a huge tell if work has been done. Look at panels for the gap and if they line up right. Confirm if any mods have been done that may cause a state inspection issue or warranty issues. Carfax results(not 100% accurate but help tell a story)drive it

You can look for common BimmerCode features (auto start/stop off, fake engine noise disabled, etc.). Those by themselves are not a red flag, but it will tell you that there may have been more extensive mods (which again, may not necessarily be a red flag).

Check bottom half of fender and rocker panels. These take a beating from rocks. But honestly this is almost unavoidable. Rock guards and ppf help, but not 100%.

Obviously, the condition of the brakes & tires versus the mileage will tell you a lot about how it was driven. Shoot me a VIN and I can check Toyota's service history database as well.

Are you dead set on getting a 2020 model year?
