Blind spot question and more

Hey guys!

I'm thinking about picking up a 2023 Supra in Stratospheric Blue whenever it comes out... Does anyone have issues with blind spots? or is the actual monitor on this car pretty good in most cases? I have a 2019 VW Golf R right now so in general I'm not used to a 2 door vehicle.

I've also seen quiet a bit of used newer 2021-2022 Supra's around locally that seemed abnormal. I've asked a few dealers as to why the person traded them in and none of them could give me a straight answer. Do any of you guys know why most turn them in at extremely low mileage/almost new?

Sorry if this stuff has been asked before but I tried to do a search on the forum about it but couldn't really find anything. Just trying to do some homework before pulling the trigger eventually.

I don't have issues with the blind spots, but I've been driving cars with shitty visibility for almost a decade now so have gotten pretty used to it.

The blind spot monitors seem to work pretty well, they were actually something I was really looking forward to as my previous car (370Z) didn't have them, and had similar restricted visibility. I find with a combination of general awareness + monitors I don't constantly feel the need to try to check blind spot through the tiny quarter windows, which are often blocked by the passenger side seat for the right side.

In terms of used cars, I don't really know - I've definitely seen people taking advantage of the super high used car prices to sell back brand new cars they have only owned for 1-2 years and make money on it.

I also wouldn't be surprised if some small number of folks buy these cars and then realize they really miss having a backseat / bigger trunk, or have their situation change in a way that means they will need a more practical car.

High resale price, people not being able to afford it, covid money needed elsewhere, select few with oil consumption issue is probably why so many used one.

For sake of argument I do not trust a car to tell me something is in my blind spot. I know that’s probably unreasonable given technology these days but I would rather look for myself. I got these and actually covered up the little triangle in the mirror.

As others have said, the blind spot monitors are helpful (and you can adjust the range). I always still double-check and try to maintain good situational awareness. When in doubt, a healthy application of throttle doesn’t hurt either! ?

Convex side mirrors really help with the visibility. It’s a non-issue for me anymore, don’t even need the blind spot indicators.

My previous car was a 370z and the blind spot is worse than the supra. I had the circular blind spot mirrors. I feel that the supra has a narrower c pillar and more functional quarter window. I always do a head check and use the blind spot monitoring system. But if you're coming from a 4 door you're going to feel blind. You're blind when you back out of a parking spot that is angled. But the supra has a sensor for that.

I have my mirrors pointed outward quite a bit so no issue with blind spots. I also have a Golf-R so know where you're coming from... Golf-R has better forward visibility while turning on an incline. Size wise, it's nearly identical length, Supra is just a tad plus wider.. My Supra is parked next to my Golf-R so I can compare side by side..

There's blue convex mirror by i think Rexpeed (on the sponsor topics somewhere). Get that if you're overly worried, but yes BSM works great. I'd have liked a warning chime for those tired drives...

My other car is a MK7 GTI, so same boat.

There is significantly less visibility out of the Supra at all angles. With that said, you shouldn’t be concerned about blind spots.

The blind spot monitoring system is very good and has adjustable range. I have it on the longest setting and it’s really conservative. Additionally, I have the little convex mirrors and placed them where they do not cover the triangle, so I have both “systems” in place.

I personally don’t shoulder check no matter the car, but even if you do, you’re not going to see much out of the Supra. You can rely 100% on the blind spot monitor, convex mirrors, rear view cam, parking sensors, and tilting passenger mirror and be A-OK.

As far as used cars that are newer/low mileage:
1) Be mindful of oil consumption issues with some 2021s
2) This is a higher-ish priced 2-seater. It’s fairly common to see people own these for a short period due to practicality reasons, financial reasons, or just jumping to the next shiny thing. Also, this is often not people’s DD.
3) Focus on condition and maintenance, not necessarily number of owners. Check for consistent oil changes and ideally a break in oil change around 1200 miles.

My 2020 had two owners with 9k miles. But the oil was changed twice in that time, and now it’s flawless with a downpipe and stage 2 OTS tune.

The visibility is worse in this than a BRZ, BSM default setting alerts you TOO much and ruined some of my confidence with the feature, but after turning it down, if I'm changing lanes and the BSM is alerting, I hold off until I see what it see's.
