Clutch Slipping on stock A91 MT...

Not sure if it's just my car or something that others also experience but when the hill assist engages the the e-brake on mine, it doesn't disengage smoothly. When trying to move the car on an incline it jerks cuz I have to press the gas way more than I need to before it releases. Even on small hills I can't inch the car forward without feeling like I have an anchor stuck to it.

On mine it's barely there - holds for about 2 secs, after that you are on your own!

Same with my MX5 and daughters Ford Focus. Barely noticeable and works perfectly in our driveway (some of the biggest inclines in Florida ?)

Yeah that might just be yours. It works exactly as you would expect on mine. Not noticeable at all.

On a side note, I test drove a friends MT cayman, and man was I left speechless by its shifter feel.

I always thought these journalists were full of fake praise and crap, but that cayman shifter feels like well-oiled, bolt action rifle; its smooth, mechanical, precise and short. There was no wobble at all. Every gears slots in so gdamned precisely.

Wonder if someone will make better shifter linkage for our supras, along with a short-throw kit.

I reached out to MGW who makes precision short throws for mustangs, vettes, other muscle cars and asked if they were interested in making a short throw for the Supra. Said they didn't intend to but man I was really hoping they would as people seem to love their MGW shifters in the new S550 Mustangs.

My brother in law was just teasing me about his recently installed MGW shifter on his new S550..

I sometimes forget that the manual on the supras is pretty bespoke and rare.
It's sad to think companies won't be motivated to spend on r&d for a such a niche group of people...

Florida has inclines?

yeah, our homes are built up much higher than the street to allow for rainwater runoff. The surrounding lakes (retention ponds - man made lakes) are created by digging up dirt & rock for our home’s foundation - to keep them higher than the street. Pretty decent incline. Depending on what flood zone you live in determines how high your home needs to be built up. Some are even on stilts and the poor cars down below just have to bare any hurricane ? flooding. Sound like paradise? ?

same. corner house built up to 18.5’ above sea level….neighbors not so much.

Florida does have inclines. Panhandle on I-10 has ridiculous hills

Perceived clutch problems, CDV and upgrade solutions then nothing. People just learned how to use a clutch I guess....

...Just part of getting "in tune" with the machine you're driving or riding.

Yep. I thought I may have clutch slipping issues too after reading this thread and the "other" clutch issues thread, and that the CDV or bad design, poor workmanship, or crap parts were to blame.

I have 1800+miles on the car now, recently did a spirited drive with a lot of heavy braking, hill climbs, shifting and and clutch action on a canyon road, and lately have been daily driving the Supra, I rip on it every chance I get, it is way too much fun.

I am very happy to report that the car is so far performing great. Maybe I just got used to the car, and/or the clutch, engine, and trans have some miles on them so everything is broken in and working together as designed. I still find that super-quick shifts just don't work in this car, but I'm OK with that since that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the driving experience.

My beater car is an old Integra, when I switch out between the two cars the clutch feel is actually kind of similar to the Supra, or maybe it's all psychological ?

Anyway, when I need a new clutch I'll probably go aftermarket. Adding a pic of the Supra with a McLaren 720s and Lexus IS 500 when we were at the top.

My car is currently inop and you’re making me miss it. I do love driving this car. It’s so engaging with a MT and the love you get is the cherry on top. Went to a 1000+ car show a few weeks and the car was snapping necks and not one bad comment all day. (Not inop for a clutch either, 2,500 miles and works great)

Ya I am picky with sound and the downpipe definitely made it tricky, even tho it is catted and not nearly as huge of a sound difference as with Catless, but more and more I have been not liking the catless b58 sound, too much rasp.

I feel like our sound taste might be the same. I’d want to keep catted DP to avoid the smell on a DD. My dream is catted but higher flow DP, stock catback, external WGs, hoping that gives the right sound combo but keeps it quiet during normal driving.
only thing that bugs me about the B58 is the sound and massive amount of pops / burbles.

In the Focus RS world people are commonly upgrading the std turbo bypass valve. Why? because it's a Plastic housing diaphragm type and "they can't handle extra boost application". Thing is no one has ever seen one actually not handle the extra boost or fail. It's all about fitting a "billet" valve because it must be better. Wrong. The std valve gives no problems and is reliable for years and the top shelf alloy billet piston type is just money wasted. Add to that the billet valve requires removal, disassembly and greasing every 6 months (which is in the "fine" print of the instillation documents) Why would you replace a perfectly good bypass valve with an expensive aftermarket item that requires maintenance every 6 months?

this reminds me of my VAG days, all the 1.8T shops pushed fancy BPVs just like this lol, it was a MaNDaToRY upgrade for “chipped” boost levels.
Like they all ignore the fact that either design holds just fine as a result of physics.
I kept my stocker without issue including with big turbo.
Anyway it made me LOL to it with other communities.

Now back to the topic of clutches…

Did any of the PR owners come back with results after slippage? Curious if they all sold their cars, went to aftermarket clutches, deleted the clutch valves, or none of the above and everything is fine?

took me a few days on and off the read this entire thread and while I am waiting on a manual MK5 to be delivered this thread made me extremely nervous.
I don’t plan to drag or even road track this car, it’s just going to be a daily and occasional highway pull car so not much need to shift hard. But that said aftermarket clutch will be needed at some point just to handle the 600-700whp desired.

My question is: if the CDV is the cause, meaning people are shifting and getting back on the gas too quickly and going faster than the CDV allows, wouldn’t aftermarket clutches have the same issue? Not sure about how the hydraulic one from that FX1000 video works exactly but in general it seems like any clutch would be prone to the extra wear and eventual slip.
and last question comment: any of you original posters that have edited this thread, please come back and share your clutch status as of now.
so far all I am seeing is NitroYellow still has an issue, he just avoids it by not driving the car hard from a stop thru 1-3
