Thanks for the feedback Pete.
yeah the xgps160 is way better than the built in 1 hz gps on the phone. i'm actually gonna borrow a friend's garmin setup for a bit to see how it compares, since i still have some gps speed issues in the downhill and uphill. racechrono is best of the bunch for phone apps though.
I'm actually really impressed with the software. Just wish it was more accurate/reliable.

I'll give the GPS antenna a try. It's nice that it can integrate a Bluetooth OBD-II reader too.

Got some work to do Saturday before Thompson on Sunday.
That’s the one I used to use before my Garmin Catalyst. It integrates perfectly with iOS & Bluetooth. I used to use Harry’s Laptimer. Like Rock said however, the app glitches too much. Same with TrackAddict.

I bring that hockey puck with me now on road trips while using Apple CarPlay. Never miss a turn in a big city with that kind of GPS accuracy. It’s fantastic!

Ok fellas, where do I mount this thing so it gets a good signal, won't overheat, and won't go flying around my car on the first lap? ?

Before the Catalyst, I put the puck right in the rear tray behind the drink holders. It fits in there nicely with the rubber flappy thing it comes with. Then turn it off when back in the paddock.

If you turn it on 1st, while you‘re doing your in car checkup, putting your helmet on, etc., it will maximize its signal and continue to improve (it’s accuracy) while driving to the grid.

Great stuff! Thanks Mark!! No issues with signal degradation from the roof?

I'm debating buying a GoPro for this setup too. I figure I can always use it elsewhere once I upgrade to a Catalyst down the road. It would be sweet to do track videos with overlays, even if I'm the only person watching them. ?

Not a Corvette.

That has to be the worst place to put it. How many satellites did it pick up and what was the signal quality?

Best place is the dash or even stuck to the top of the windshield behind the rear view mirror like a toll pass.

You are absolutely right and that’s what I did when it was a permanent fixture in my S2K.

In the Supra I was worried about it flying off the dash and didn’t want to use Velcro or something else. I knew I was going to get a catalyst. Thus an afterthought having trouble with the various LapTimer apps. However, I was shocked it got reception as well as it did. It picked up everything once out of garage.

So now we do the same on road trips with rental cars. I just put the puck close to the cigarette lighter where it’s charging or someplace snug.

I'm thinking about mounting mine behind the rear view with Velcro, or really far forward on the passenger side dash with the rubber doohickey. If that doesn't work into the cubby it goes lol.

Yeah it’s not as line sight dependent as I thought it would be. It was more vehicle location dependent. I had to be away from the paddock in Sebring (grandstand garages) or garages at Homestead.

Have fun! It’s incredibly accurate. I can’t wait for phones to get that kind of hertz accuracy

From research Garmin has really improved gps software. Apparently, the early units would NOT start data and recording until it was happy with strong satellite acquisition.
Now it will say- low GPS but will let you start a session and then it 10/10 times finds enough signal to be reliable and accurate.
usually, when I am trying to park the car in the shade tight against a building or someone's trailer between sessions.

those pucks are great for all kinds of applications. good luck!
