Exhaust tip mod

I know IND has matte black replacement exhaust tips for the OEM exhaust for $300. However, I was thinking of getting my OEM stainless steel tips powder-coated.

My question is, can normal powder-coating withstand the heat without degrading or fading or is the Cerakote high-heat coating the best option?

Per google for exhaust temps;

The average temperature range for the exhaust system is between 600 to 930 Fahrenheit. Driving for a longer period or driving the car harder can cause temperatures to rise to 1600 to 1800 Fahrenheit as well.

Powder coating per google;

The most common powder coatings can withstand temperatures between ambient to 200°F, although most are on the lower end of the spectrum. These general powders will do the trick for most typical applications, but may be susceptible to significant color change and other issues once you start pushing that 200°F+ range.

Based off this, I would say cerakote would be your best bet.

I’ve had great luck with black high-temp engine paint. I did the tips on my SLP exhaust with my Dodge Charger and after 5 years it was still going strong with no pealing. 3-4 coats and it still looks great. While the tips get hot, it’s well within range of high temp engine paint.

I've had good results with high temp exhaust/header spray paint on my Harley. It's a matte black and it's been on there a couple years and still looks brand new.

I'm surprised that powder coat is 200F which I think it's similar to plastidip. If so, street driving isn't so bad but if you are on the track, it may have issue. I plastidip'd my tips and it burned quite a bit off on 1st session.

Cerakote so you don’t have to worry about it.

I like the idea of black tips matching the lower rear bumper but with the stainless steel muffler and tailpipes will clash a bit with a black tip. If everything was blacked out beneath… it would look cool.

Black powder coated tips will not wear with normal exhaust heat… I’ve had them done on a prior bmw without issues.

Using a high temp BBQ Krylon is a nice cheap option.

I may just go with the guys who powder-coated my wheels then. I can always get them redone in a high temp paint if the coating fails or fades. Besides, the OEM tips aren't expensive if I need to replace them anyway.

I just don't trust myself to do a uniformly decent spray paint job.

Opted for powder coating the stock oem tips.... prep and product used is key for these.
