I have wireless chargers in my house that are 12v DC and charge really fast. The phone only gets marginally warm on those, but I experience the same thing with the lava phone and malfunctioning in the Supra. Almost makes me want to rip out the factory stuff and retro fit one of the type I have in my house. ?

This is the same behavior as BMW. Not only does it make the phone hot, but it also barely keeps up with the drain from usage (i.e., CarPlay).

Noticed the same issue when I first got mine, took it to the dealer they kept saying its normal... my phone would literally hold charge and not go up while it felt like it was on fire it would lag. I think it's a factory issue that they have to figure out for now wired charging it is.

Not supposed to get so hot they start malfunctioning which is what happens. That’s not how it’s supposed to work. That’s why I also use the USB. No biggie. Works perfectly plugged in.
You know most modern electronics have a thermal sensor built in that will shut them off before they get too hot right...?

In OP's example, he said he had GPS running, and spotify. Both are requiring the device to run data with stable connection. Top that with feeding it wireless charge.

It's going to generate heat. I don't know shit about cars, but batteries on the other hand, hue hue hue. :p

This isn't an issue with the car, BMWs, or anything else. This is just the nature of wireless charging. Throw your phone on your wireless charging mat at home, stream spotify, and ping GPS every 4 seconds. You'll see the exact same behavior.

Um, yes, but thanks for sharing. You do know that other wireless charging options we use in other vehicles DO NOT overheat our phones right…?
Other wireless options?

What... like you got a pillow attachment that you put it on that charges while you sleep?

Look man, I'm just saying charging generates heat since OP was worried it was hot. Any wireless charger is going to generate more heat than a direct cable. You're talking about more surface area that is transfering power.

And if you're saying that the Supra's mat is causing your phone to display a message like "Your device needs to cool before use" then I would check the phone at a store before the mat.

Software that prevents temps or crap running in the background would affect that.

Dang. You got to that fast. I tried to delete because I’m in a bad mood at work right now and realized I was being snarky. Sorry about that.

I don’t get device needs to cool messages on the phone. It just starts screwing up on Pandora or Amazon Music after only 45 minutes. When I take it off the mat, it’s really hot. After maybe 5 or 10 minutes to cool down it works correctly again.

Sorry for the snarky attitude!

I think what people dont realize is its not just a wireless charger, it is also a cellular repeater, and the combination is what causes excess heat. I threw in a proclip and a magsafe charger and it does all I need. Id highly recommend it.

My wife has a wireless charger in her vehicle and it acts the exact same (phone gets warm and it is really not a charger but more of a maintainer).

I usually forget to put the phone on the charger in the Supra and it's in my pocket. Love wireless Carplay.

I hope I can shed some light on what is going on in your case ....

There are several factors which contributes to the phone heating up while wireless charging. The following is a simplified explanation of what is going on.
  1. wireless charging inefficiency: in wireless charging, the power is passed from a coil (inductor) in the charging mat to a similar coil (inductor) in the phone. i.e. [12V -> AC -> coil] ~ inductive coupling ~ [coil -> AC -> DC -> battery]. If the two coils are perfectly aligned, the efficiency is about 90%. The 10% loss is converted to heat. If the two coils are not perfectly aligned, there is greater loss which results in more heat. With a charging mat, more than likely the phone will not be perfectly aligned resulting it lower efficiency. For iPhones, the mag safe products automatically aligns the coils resulting in the highest efficiency.
  2. battery charging: Charging a battery generates heat due to the internal resistance of the battery. As a battery ages, it loses capacity due to increased internal resistance. The higher internal resistance causes the battery to heat up more. The internal resistance increases due to the number of charging cycles the battery has experienced.
  3. Power for the cellular radio: The cellular radio uses alot of power, depending on how far the radio towers are. If the cell tower is far, the radio must use more power to reach that tower. When using a GPS mapping app, the cellular radio (phone) tries to reach several towers to triangulate the exact position. In addition, your Spotify app requires the radio to stream the song.
  4. Power for the wifi radio: The wireless apple carplay uses the wifi radio which adds to the power required.
  5. Processing power to run simultaneous real-time apps. Running a mapping app AND the streaming app simultaneously uses alot of power because of the real time requirements of both apps. The processor must switch between the two processes.
I would say that items 3 and 5 are the biggest contributors to heat. Hope this helps.

For the MagSafe car mount, I would recommend the following;
  1. ProClip car mount for GR Supra $34.99
  2. ProClip MagSafe iPhone Holder $39.99
  3. Apple Magsafe Charger $39.00
For my iPhone XSMax, I personally replaced #2 and #3 with the following;
  1. ProClip iPhone holder - Rugged case $39.99
  2. Anker USB-A to lightning cable, 3 feet $15.99
Note: A wire is the most efficient way to deliver power to your phone, eliminating the power needed for the wifi radio, and wireless charging. Also the iPhone XSMax does not support the magsafe system ... only Qi Charging (i.e. no magnet). Only the iPhone 13/12 are MagSafe compatible.
I totally agree with everything

Very well done explanation. It definitely does make sense that heat will be generated during wireless charging.
I'm a huge fan of wired everything! I am 59 years old so anything wired is the way to go. I dont feel that wireless anything (except cell phones) has reached it's full potential. JMHO.....

I had this problem with my iPhone X pro max. It didn’t charge quickly at all and I’d have to take it off when it got hot or the music and apple car play would freeze. For some reason it doesn’t happen with the 13 pro max. It has to be something with the way the wireless charging is between certain phones and the Toyota or bmw charger. No idea.
