OT: just out of curiosity, what is everyone's take on the Avalon in the Toyota line-up?

Tada mentioned this car when he was in town a while back (brand new one drove by us), and I commented that it was one that always confused me a bit because it's in between the Camry and ES, but has low sales and seems too premium for Toyota and not premium enough for Lexus. Tada then said, "what about Japan?" To which I really couldnt say much because that place is a huge marketing contradiction haha

Looks ok but It’s a class of car I’m not that interested in. Full size FWD.

I have owned Camrys in the past then moved on to Lexus sedans (IS, GS) for the same reliability and better driving dynamics. Tell them they need to make another ISF with a 6-speed manual :)

My question is more for the BMW guys. A lot of people over at the BMW forum have express interested of buying the Toyota just for the coupe body style. But they than want to make their own "Z4 coupe" buy swapping out front ends (hood, fenders, bumper, grill, headlights). So my question is would be how easy would this be? Would BMW parts bolt straight on? Or would they need to make some minor modifications?

I would think it will just be easier to get an aftermarket top.

Hard to say without the car being released. But with enough parts swapped anything is possible. But until we see how different they are. Who knoes

Could just order the roof panel from Toyota and have body shop welded it on. Or go with an aftermarket roof.

These cars are unibodies, so that isn't possible. But yeah, I'm sure there will be some aftermarket hardtop options for all the Bimmer boys.

My take is that it's a way for Toyota to cater to old people (sorry Jonny) who want to have a little nicer/fancier car than a Camry but don't want to spend Lexus money or look like they spent Lexus money.

My guess with Toyota is that it's cheap for them to produce on the same or similar platform as Camry and ES, probably only marginally more expensive than a Camry to build, but sells for $10k more. Cost wise it's more like putting a high-option Camry on the lot. With the same reasoning, I doubt they sell that many V6 limited Camrys either but they offer those as well since it ultimately adds to their bottom line.

^ It might be an actual FJ Cruiser successor concept. I think a lot of people including myself were expecting the Toyota FT-4X to be that only to see it was not.
