Isn't the recess just a thin cast ring around the plug? Hence my thoughts on grinding a section of the cast ring away creating a slot in it for the banjo and AN fitting.

It's been a very long time since I looked at the area, but I remember even if the ring was gone, you still needed to space the banjo for some reason. It was high enough that the factory plastic cap would still not go on, which was the same issue I had using a 90° AN hose end.

Edit - there is a plastic cover that hangs below the pan, that's why.
