Hey. I'm new to the forum and new to the supra lifestyle. I'm very heavily considering a supra for the aftermarket support but wanted some advice. I was told that ordering one new off the showroom floor is a mistake due to the ECU being apparently untunable? I just wanted to learn more about that, get some advice on if I should just buy brand new or find a 2020 and take that instead. Thank you for anyone who shares anything and I look forward to learning more.

If you want to tune, get a 2020.

Supra has a lifestyle? Same old me chomping on cookies and corn dogs..

You can run a JB4 if you can't flash it, no? I can flash mine but still running JB4.

Agree with this depending on your circumstances. In the end, I decided I didn’t want to flash for a variety of reasons. If I was doing a 750hp build it would be one thing, but I just want to scoot a little quicker than average. The JB4s seem to hold their value as well.

Can someone help me understand the difference between JB4 and a Flash tune?

I understand my 2021 (Oct, 2020 build date) has a locked ECU. A JB4 modifies the tune without actually cracking the ECU? Please help me for I am still a noob.

A quick and dirty explanation:

Let's say the car currently runs 15 psi at full throttle and you want it to run 18 psi. With a flash tune, you actually modify the lookup tables in the ECU itself so that it targets 18 psi natively. With a JB4, it sits in between the manifold pressure sensor and the ECU, the JB4 actually "lies" to the ECU and tells it the manifold pressure is 3 psi less than the real value, convincing the stock ECU (with the stock tables) to increase the boost by another 3 psi. The end result is that the ECU "thinks" it's only running at 15 psi, when in reality it's at 18 psi. The JB4 doesn't just intercept the manifold pressure though, it also can alter fueling and other parameters by lying to the ECU about those sensor readings as well. The JB4 is a dirty hack, but it's effective if you don't have access to the ECU itself and you're only making small changes.

Thank you for that super simple to understand explanation. So I guess my question is, what is the limitation of a JB4 and would people with Tunable ECU's opt to do JB4 instead of a full tune?

The jb4 is reversible..it can be completely removed..

A flash tune actually rewrites your ecu..
Pretty much permanently..

I'm sure plenty of people with unlocked ECU's run jb4 as it's easily removable..

It's actually, from a strictly engineering standpoint, much less of a hack. I'll spare you the 'back in my day' speech.

You can tune a 2021, but the build date must be prior to 06/20. I've got a 2021 with a build date of 03/20, so I'm good to tune. Just call the dealerships and ask to verify build date on the door jam.

I have a 2020. I have a active autowerks downpipe and an injen Intake with the JB4 with EWG connection and am running E30 on map 5. It is a huge difference from stock. Totally worth every penny. I’m pretty much at the limit of what the JB4 can do alone per Terri at burgers. The best thing is when and if I want more. I disconnect the JB4 put it on here for sale and it will be gone in a couple hours for close to full price. Again 100% satisfied with it. I’d love to get dyno’d and see where I’m actually at but haven’t yet.
