You are actively throwing money away. 1,500 miles is absolutely insane for a modern synthetic oil its not 1975 anymore. Even 3000 is insane.

Change once per year or at 10k which ever comes first. If tracking it drain oil after 4-6 days at the track, if you are proper fast you may want to change earlier. Ill also only change the filter once per year even if I drain the oil multiple times due to being at the track.

Test your oil and listen to their recommendations, modern oil of most brands are very capable of going 10k+ miles. Get your oil tested by a lab at 1500 or 3000 if you are that worried but its going to come back as basically brand new at that mileage, keep increasing the mileage and test the oil to determine where it starts to drop and then change it earlier next time.

I dont drive more then 10k miles per year even in my daily. Tacoma gets changed once a year, Supra will get the same + track changes if needed. My race bike got changed every 4th race weekend, oil filter twice per year.
Well said. Wasting money on OLD advice on oil that will last the 10k miles/15000km's is absurd. Oil has come a long way. Old habits have not. Unless you are tracking or in a 'severe' use regime, dont change early. Keep the money at work not wasted on pissing away good oil that needs to stay in your motor a touch longer!

I always thought it was funny that people say don’t throw your money away ($70) for an oil change on a $60K sports car.

Even if you change your oil twice a year that’s pennies in comparison to other expenses in your life. Hell I pay $70 every 2 weeks for gas in my Tacoma.

I changed mine at 1200 miles as that is how much I drove in a year. Knowing break in can fill up the filament, I changed the filter, but this year I’m just going to change the oil at 2150 and probably drive no more than 1200 miles.

Always funny when I hear people here (and other forums) changing oil so soon. This is a mass produced BMW engine that thousands of people around the world are using everyday with no long term problems.

The forum is a bit of an exception. Lots of people here running track days consistently and running power far beyond standard so no I am not going to change my oil every 9k miles ?☠

Do you drain your gas tank at the end of every year and throw it out? Fuel lubricates the fuel system and keeps it from corroding. Thats only $60 bucks to do as well. The reason is because its wasteful and not needed. Obviously its your money do what you want, but modern oil and filters are more then capable to lasting a full interval.

Plenty of people here who are changing oil every 3k miles with zero track days though. But hey its there money and time. I just find it funny.

Then I see my friend driving his McLaren every week and doing the bare minimum maintenance ?

Yeah, I do. I don't want E85 sitting in the tank for 6 months. As for oil, my car really only sees heavy track use. It all depends. I would recommend changing the oil after break-in, and that goes for any engine. Not just a sports car.

Understandably changing oil after break in nowadays is likely only a piece of mind sort of thing. Which I will do to any vehicle I get. From then on for me it’ll be yearly since I don’t drive it nearly enough to do it based on mileage. By product of working from home. Another by product of working from home, when I do drive it it’s typically for fun… “with no particular place to go.”

I wouldn't expect the dealer to do it free every 1500 miles. They are going to give you a hard time.

Actually I just got my Supra about a week ago and had to take it in to get some idrive related issue fixed. They told me everything has to be done by a certified Supra tech and I had to leave the car there for a minimum of 24 hours. I asked if that applied to oil changes and they said yes. They gave me the car back in less than 24 hours so maybe it's a case of under-promise and over-deliver. Still not super-duper thrilled about taking my car in and getting an overnight loaner for every oil change.

You guys are making me feel bad for not changing the oil in my STI for all of the pandemic. ?

The great oil change debate continues. ?

@MK5 GR regardless of answers on here don’t feel pressured to follow what the dealership says. You always have options, follow what you think is best.

I use Schaeffer oil 5-30. Great results, the engine is actually a little quieter and slightly better gas millage. Where I bought my car, they would change the oil at any distance and just take it off of one of the free oil changes. Said it was no issue. I change my own oil as well.

I normally change oil on new motors at 1,500 miles but dealer refused to do it. So I told them I wanted it changed when it hits 3,000 and they said no to that as well. They claim the car will let me know when it needs to be changed. I am not real comfortable with this so what is everyone else doing. I can do it myself but exactly what oil and are y’all using Toyota filter or BMW or is there something better? Any additional additives like Molly etc. Thank y’all.
I changed it myself at 2500 mile and every 5000 miles. B58 has some consumption issues under heavy loads / sporty driving. But once I get to 20k miles I will extend it to 7500 miles. LIQUMOLY is the best brand for BMW's and I also went with a 5W30 oil instead of 0W20. May hurt fuel economy but better if you like to rev your engine. I've noticed all the filter brands have the same markings on them which prob mean you're getting the same filter no matter what brand you buy.

Is it okay to drive if the car is a little over 5k miles? I won't be able to get an oil change until this weekend but I still need to drive to work

No, if you drive it past 5K without an oil change the engine will explode.

Ofc its ok to drive it! ?
