Oil pump tsb?

So how long can we technically "live with" the default high pressure scenario before it becomes detrimental to the engine? Until the CEL comes on?

Not being able to measure the oil is annoying but not scary since I haven't burned or lost any oil in my 5 years of ownership and do religious oil changes myself once a year. (I only drive like 4000 miles a year.)

If only we had a normal dipstick... Don't worry, not gonna start a new oil thread. :fear:
I guess that's hard to say but it isn't a totally comfortable situation. Apart from the extra power to drive the pump there could also be issues with the pumps drive longevity. Things aren't necessarily designed to work at maximum output permanently.
I think if I had an affected car and not going to flip it in 3 years but keep it for a while I'd be checking the pump output scheduling at every oil change. Can be done via the OBD port and Bimmerlink I'm pretty sure. No doubt others will correct me if I'm wrong on that :doh:

No idea, you can still read the oil level with BimmerLink, and you should either way since it’s MM accurate.

Well, after taking the car to a DIFFERENT Toyota dealer (per the 800 number's recommendation since the first dealer refused to do anything further "without codes"), they were able to duplicate the bad pressure numbers obtained by my Indie BMW shop (and confirmed by BMW Tech Support as needing a new oil pump IF it was a Z4 - hah!) and it has been approved for a warranty oil pump replacement.

Well, after taking the car to a DIFFERENT Toyota dealer (per the 800 number's recommendation since the first dealer refused to do anything further "without codes"), they were able to duplicate the bad pressure numbers obtained by my Indie BMW shop (and confirmed by BMW Tech Support as needing a new oil pump IF it was a Z4 - hah!) and it has been approved for a warranty oil pump replacement.
Good shit, bro’. Glad you’re getting it taking care of in warranty.

It’s truly been a PITA and it shouldn’t have to be that way. Everyone with a 2021 built in 2020 after they locked the ECU should routinely check the oil level. Your car likely has an oil pump with plastic internals, specifically the retaining ring goes bad. When the computer stops doing it, bring the car in ASAFP. The 5 yr power train warranty is ticking. Don’t end up with a $2700 repair bill. Happy to walk people through the process, just post up here.

Yes, agreed, unrelated. I couldn’t find any date ranges here other than mid 2020 builds. But lots of dates on the B58 forums. Well known problem there and BMW even had their version of a TSB out, which they later yanked from their data base.

I see all these comments about the "Plastic oil pump" - however we still do not have root cause for this issue, and assumptions are being made (rightly so) that the upgraded pump fixes the issue.

However, I have seen on the BMW forums and even this one where the pump had trouble reading the level and people replaced it and pulled it apart and nothing was broken inside.....very strange.
