I have a radar detector connected via a mirrortap, and I can confirm it will not shut off after 7 minutes as expected. I've tested this with the keys across the house, checked back after an hour, and attempted some troubleshooting (e.g., turning the wiper lever to "off" rather than "auto" in case it was related to the rain auto-sensing circuit). However, the RD doesn't power down as it should.

Instead, I've had to set my radar detector to turn off automatically after an hour. Additionally, it doesn't power back up upon ignition. It seems that the circuit you're advised to tap into (the two pins on the pink connector plug) is always on....but only for some and not others.

Based on some discussions here, I've seen speculation that those with HUD installations could affect the 7-minute power-down behavior. Does this sound plausible to anyone? Am I on the right track, or is there something else I might be missing?

For now, I can live with the RD power-down-after-1-hour workaround, but I'm curious if anyone has found a way to solve it while still using the MIrrortap.

This doesn't help you...but in the mirror tap install on my '22 Premium (I have the HUD), the detector definitely shuts off after 7-ish minutes. I used the guidance from here on which wires to tap on the connector, etc.

That's so crazy! What is the main differentiator...because I know I'm not the only one who has this issue. Yeah, I used guidance from here as well + videos.

Thanks for the feedback though, at least it helps rule it out.

Did you check if it shuts off when locking the vehicle?
Did you tap into the correct wires/pins?

2020 here with HUD and my radar (r8) shuts off via mirror tap.

1) Yes- I also have a Uniden R8 (nice). I just tested again. Powered on the unit (plugged it in), got out of the car, locked the doors, set a time for 20 minutes and set my keys across the house -- it's still powered on. When taking this photo, I did not have the keys in my pocket or unlock the door.

2) Yes - there are 3 pins in the pink connector inside the mirror shroud. I installed as such:
a) red wire (DC+) goes in far-right pin
b)black wire (DC-) goes in far-left pin.
c) The middle pin remains untouched

I don't remember tapping into a red connector. I remember tapping into a flat black one on both my Supra and recently my X5. Check the post I shared.

Yeah in this thread that I referenced before my install, [here], the video shows the same rain sensing tap install in the pink connector as I have shown above (what I did).

What's funny is that further down in the same thread another user recommends a different install video, but concludes, " the wiring was the same as Christians video above." (my screenshot above). This is not accurate. They use two different plugs for the tap. This method looks more similar to what you've just shared.

So I think I've figured out a possible differentiating factor: there are different videos circulating around that recommend either the rain sensing plug (pink) or the mirror plug (black) to tap into....I think the pink-connector plug folks ended up with something that's always on. Maybe that's why there are mixed results.

I'm going to reconfigure the wires into the black-plug as shown in the 2nd image above and hope that fixes it.

Thanks all...

I'll report back with my results in the hopes this clarifies it for future installs.

I tapped into the black plug instead of the pink plug

Switched to the black connector and all is working as expected. Thanks everyone for helping to narrow this down.

For anyone searching for this in the future:

For a mirrortap installation, do not use the pink connector. Use the black connector as shown in this video:

I have an R8 installed in my '20 and it nearly killed the battery. I have to plug and unplug it every time. Very annoying... I will try switching it to the black one.
